Eilef Haugen 1924 - 2004

Eilef Haugen, 80, Minot, formerly of Tioga, died Friday, July 23, 2004, in a Minot hospital.

Eilef Haugen was born February 18, 1924, at Dry Fork Township south of Tioga, ND to Edward and Aslaug (Granskosgen) Haugen. He was baptized and confirmed at Betaini Lutheran Church, south of Tioga. He attended The Strom School and worked on the family farm and later in the State of Washington.

On June 17, 1950, he married Mabel Eileen Erickson in Ray, ND. He worked at the Farmers Union Co-op stores in Ray and Dagmar, Montana and moved back to Tioga in 1956, where he managed and later owned Our Own Hardware. He later worked at Haliburton and managed the Tioga Legion Club until his retirement in 1999. He and Mabel moved to Minot in 1999. After Mabel's death in 2000 he became a Foster Grandparent at Sunnyside Elementary School in Minot, until illness forced him to retire this year. He lived at the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva since May of this year.

Eilef was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, the Sons of Norway, and the International Order Of Odd Fellows all of Tioga. He also drove school bus for the Tioga School District for a number of years. Eilef enjoyed his grandchildren and being outdoors. He loved camping, fishing and helping on the farm.

Survivors: Eileen (Al) McAleer, Fargo, Linda (Richard) Beall, Velva, Beverley (Graeme) McDougal, Grant, MT, and Sharon Haugen, Helena, MT; sons, Richard (Jan) Haugen, and Steve Haugen and friend Linda Nadeau, all of Minot, and Earl (Cathleen) Haugen, Thompson, ND; seven grandchildren, MaryAnn Knutson, Margaret McAleer, Rick Beall, Ian Haugen, Anna Haugen, Eric Haugen and Emma Haugen; three great-granddaughters, Kayleigh and Aubri Knutson and Maegan Larson; sister, Olga Kelly, Albuquerque, NM; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins survive. Eilef was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years Mabel; his parents; brothers, Carl and Melvin Haugen and sisters, Swanhild Nelson and Margaret Lewis.

Funeral: Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at 11:00 a.m., at Bethel Free Lutheran Church, Minot, ND.

Visitation and family service: Monday, July 26, 2004, from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m., with the family service at 7:00 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND.

Burial: Tuesday at 1:30 p.m., at Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND.
