Lewis E. Haskins 1918 - 2002

Lewis E. Haskins, 84, Glenburn, died Monday, October 28, 2002, in a Minot hospital.

He was born June 15, 1918, to Louis and Anna Haskins near Deering, ND. He was reared in the Deering area and graduated from Deering High School. Following graduation, he moved to the West Coast where he worked various jobs before entering the United States Army on April 8, 1941. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater in New Guinea and the Southern Philippines during World War II. He was honorably discharged on October 8, 1945 and returned to the Deering area.

On November 7, 1945, he married Norma Kulsethmoe. They farmed and raised cattle in Margaret Township, near Deering for 38 years. Lew retired in 1983 to care for his wife who was being treated for cancer. Norma died in August of 1984. Lewis continued living on the farm after retirement and in September of 1995, he met Vivian Harris.

He was a member of the Deering Lutheran Church and was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #26 and the Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post #753, both of Minot.

Lewis was active in both the Glenburn and Minot Horseshoe clubs. He competed at both the state and national levels. He won the state title in the Elders Class A Division (70 and over) of the North Dakota Horseshoe Pitchers Association, every year from 1994-1998 and most recently won in 2000. He participated in the World Horseshoe Tournaments in Spearfish, SD, Gillette, WY, Ainsworth, NE and Bismarck. In September of 2002, he was inducted into the NDHPA Hall of Fame.

Survivors: son, Bruce Haskins and wife Margo, Minot; special companion, Vivian Harris, Glenburn and her family; seven grandchildren, Rachel Haskins, Megan Haskins, Jerry (Judi) Frye, Sheldon (Lori) Frye, Sheryl (Grant) Heizelman, Michelle (Wayne) Fuller-Hamons and Kenneth Fuller; two great-grandchildren, Justin and Danielle Frye; five step-great-grandchildren, Cody and Wyatt Heizelman and Richard "Zack" Covington, Ashley Lane and Austin Miller; sisters, Elsie Smaciarz, Raymond, WA and Louise Wright, Cedar Hill, MO; sons-in-law, Jerald Frye and Michael Fuller and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; daughters, Susan Frye and Kathryn Fuller; granddaughter, Jennifer Frye; brother, Howard Haskins; sisters, Irene Evenson, Ruth Haskins, Esther Power, Violet Greenwald and Myrtle Haskins.

Funeral: Friday, 10:30 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, Minot.

Visitation: Thursday from noon until 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Burial: Surrey Community Cemetery, Surrey.
