Violet M. Harstad 1918- 2011

Violet Harstad PhotoViolet M. Harstad, 92, Mohall, ND, formerly of Minot, ND, died February 8, 2011, at the Mohall Good Samaritan Center.

Violet Mildred George was born November 15, 1918, a daughter of Denton T. and Olga A. (Suhren) George, on the family farm near Deering, ND. She was raised and educated in Deering, graduating in 1936. She then attended one year at Minot College of Commerce.

Violet married Alfred Harstad September 24, 1939, at Nidaros Lutheran Church, rural Wolseth. They made their home on the Harstad family farm until the fall of 1956, when they moved to Minot. She worked at the Farmer’s Union Credit Union and at Ellison’s Department Store.

They enjoyed traveling which took them to 40 states, four Canadian Provinces, Mexico, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and East and West Germany.

She enjoyed dancing, especially the shotish, polka, and waltz. She also enjoyed gardening, playing cards, sewing and board games. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was well known for making her good Lefse.

She was a former member of Nidaros Lutheran Church, rural Wolseth, and was currently a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Minot. She taught Sunday school and was active in Ladies Aid at both churches. She was also a member and held offices in Farmers Union Co-op in Wolseth, Ladies of the Moose Lodge in Minot, Senior Citizen League in Minot, and was a familiar face in helping at Bingo.

Her loving family includes:  husband of 71 years, Alfred, Mohall; children, Alvira (Tom) Jones, Troy, MT; Allyn (Alphia) Harstad, Glenburn; Verdell (Ed) Kolling, Decateur Island, WA; and Virgil (Karen) Harstad, Kent, WA; eight grandchildren, Alene Duran, Brock (Tanya) Harstad, Denton (Charity) Harstad, Scott (Deanna) Kolling, Kyle (Amanda) Kolling, Casey (Kerri) Kolling, Angela (Jerry) McGee, Joshua Harstad; Eric (Tina) Bakke; 20 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Violet was preceded in death by her parents; grandsons, Clint Kolling and Timothy Jones; great-grandson, Colson Kolling; sister, Virginia George; and brothers, Vallie and Vernon George. 

Funeral: Monday, June 20, 2011, at 11:00 am at Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot.

Interment:
  Monday at 2:30 pm at Nidaros Lutheran Cemetery, Rural Wolseth, ND.

Visitation: 
Sunday from Noon to 5:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Memorials
: are preferred to Alzheimer’s Association, the Anne Carlson Center for Children (formerly known as Crippled Children’s Home) in Jamestown; or to an organization of the donor’s choice.

Immediately following the funeral service, please join the family for a time of fellowship and lunch in the lower level of the church.  The graveside service will commence at 2:30 pm. There will not be a formal procession to the cemetery.

Our family would like to thank all of you for your many acts of kindness. Your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated during this difficult time. May God bless the memory of Violet.
