Margaret B. Harness 1917 - 2011

Margaret Harness PhotoMargaret B. Harness, 94, Minot ND, formerly of Velva, ND, died Monday, July 4, 2011, in a Kenmare nursing home.

Margaret Bernice Thompson was born March 21, 1917, on the family farm north of Velva. She was the oldest of five children born to Oscar and Mena (Oslie) Thompson. She attended school in Velva and was the valedictorian of the Velva High School class of 1935. 

She went on to take a business course in Minot, and was then employed by the McHenry County ASC office in Towner, ND, from 1937 until enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1944.  She was stationed at NAS Alameda, CA, in the Disbursing Office.  While there, she enjoyed crossing the bay in a water taxi and exploring the bay area cities. 

Following her honorable discharge in 1946, she returned to Velva and worked for the Krebsbach Company until her marriage to Emil A. Harness on November 25, 1949. They made their home on the Harness family farm north of Velva, where they farmed until retiring in 1975. They later moved to Velva in 1992. Emil passed away in 1995.  Margaret later moved into assisted living in Minot where she was able to enjoy her favorite hobby of reading.

She was a lifelong member of Oak Valley Lutheran Church in Velva.

She is survived by her two children, Mary Harness of Tucson, AZ; and Mark Harness of rural Velva; her sister, Mona Skar of Minot, and brothers, Orlin (Helen) Thompson of Minot and Jerome (Delores) Thompson of Tempe, AZ and Columbus, ND. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Emil; and her sister, Lorraine Thompson.

Funeral: Saturday, July 9, 2011, at 3:00 p.m. at Oak Valley Lutheran Church in Velva.

Interment:
  Velva Community Cemetery, Velva, ND.

Visitation: 
Friday from 2 to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

: The family suggests memorials to Oak Valley Lutheran Church, the Minot Area Community Foundation, or the Red Cross.
