Bertha Hackett 1913- 2011

Bertha Hackett PhotoBertha Hackett, 98, Minot, formerly of Glenburn, died Saturday, April 16, 2011 in a Minot nursing home.

Bertha Wenzel was born on March 30, 1913, a daughter of Reinhold and Amalea (Beecher) Wenzel in Pratt Township, McHenry County. She was raised and educated in rural McHenry County.

On August 7, 1931, Bertha was united in marriage to Walter Hackett at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, rural Upham, ND. In 1934, they moved to South Dakota, where they lived in Centerville and Sioux Falls. In 1945, they returned to North Dakota, residing in Glenburn, where they owned and operated Hacketts Café.  Walter passed away in August of 1978. Following his death, she continued to live in Glenburn until April of 1990.

 Bertha was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church and the Martha Circle. For one year she served on the Glenburn Betterment Committee, three years on the Glenburn Housing Board, and three years on the Renville County Council. Bertha was also President of the Glenburn Senior Citizens for two terms.

 While in Minot, Bertha served two terms as Secretary of the Minot Senior Citizens. She also became a member of Christ Lutheran Church and Sara Circle. Bertha was also active serving at the Christ Lutheran Church soup kitchen for several years.

Bertha enjoyed gardening, baking, and  visiting friends at hospital and nursing homes.

Surviving relatives:
                Daughter Alice (Gerald) Wickman, Burlington, ND; sons: Marvin (Inez) Hackett, Minot, Roger (Eliane) Hackett, Kenmare, ND; eleven grandchildren: Eric Wickman, Todd (Rhonda) Wickman, Chris (Paula) Wickman, Theresa (Jim) Knutson, Ben (Kellie) Wickman, Cyndi (Bill) Underwood, Pete Hackett, Margo (Bruce) Haskins, Melanie (Jeff) Miller, Norris (Marlys) Hackett, Marsha (David) DesLauriers;  eighteen great-grandchildren: seven great-great grandchildren; Sisters-in-law: Vivian Wenzel, Ora Mae Hackett;  Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings Amanda Kunkel, Freda Feller, Hertha Moldenhauer, Ewalt Wenzel,and Sam Wenzel.

Visitation:  Tuesday, April 19, 2011 from noon until 7 pm at Thompson Larson Funeral Home, Minot

Funeral Service:  Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at 1 pm at Christ Lutheran Church, Minot

Burial:  Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot
