Leonard V. Gustafson 1927 - 2010
Leonard V. Gustafson, 82, Blanco, NM, formerly of Lignite, ND, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 28, 2010, in his home.
Leonard Vance Gustafson was born December 19, 1927, the son of Joseph and Nellie (Oas) Gustafson. He lived on the farm homesteaded by his father 12 miles southwest of Lignite in the Foothills Township. He attended school in Leaf Mountain Township.
On May 29, 1951, he married Bernice Nielsen, daughter of Christian and Marie Nielsen of Powers Lake, ND.
Leonard was drafted in the United States Army on June 6, 1951. He proudly served his country during the Korean War and was stationed in Fort Riley, KS, and had served 11 months in Korea. He was honorably discharged March 8, 1953. After he returned home, he took over his father's farm where he lived until 1992, when he moved to Lignite. He moved to Blanco, NM, in 2006 and resided there until his death.
Leonard was a member of Tonset Lutheran Church, where he was baptized and confirmed and a member of Christ Lutheran Church of Lignite.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice; two children: Michael and Jane (Heiermann) Gustafson of Blanco, NM., Brian and Denise (Skarphol) Gustafson of McGregor, ND; four grandchildren, Jeremy and Nicole Gustafson of Norman, OK, Justin Gustafson of Moline, IL, Steven Gustafson of McGregor, ND and Nicole Gustafson of McGregor, ND; five great-grandchildren, Vance, Sierra and Zachary Gustafson of Norman, OK, and Jordyn and Tristen Gustafson of Moline, IL; and one sister, Helen Evans of Carlsbad, CA. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Nellie Gustafson; son, Steven Gustafson; and sister, Norma Schleter.
Funeral: Saturday, April 3, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, Lignite.
Visitation: Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Powers Lake, and Friday at from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, Lignite.
Prayer Service: Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, Lignite.
Memorials: are preferred to the Tonset Historical Society.

Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at
Macron Hill. Leonard’s son, Michael, will be taking him for his last ride
on a horse-drawn wagon to the cemetery.
Military honors accorded by the Lignite American Legion Post #35 along with the North Dakota National Funeral Honor Guard.
Following the graveside service, please join the family
for a time of fellowship and lunch in the fellowship hall.
