Jayne Gustafson, 57, Minot, ND, passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2008, in a Minot hospital.

Jayne Elizabeth Signalness was born May 7, 1951, a daughter of Manfred R. and Vivian J. (Lawlar) Signalness in Williston, ND. She was raised and educated in Watford City, graduating from Watford City High School in 1971.

Jayne then assisted in operation of a 4th generation family ranch, in Dunn Center, ND, where her children were raised. She helped operate the family ranch for several years. She was once married to Terry R. Hammel.

Jayne later attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND, where she received her Bachelor Degree in Social Work in 1993. She worked as a licensed social worker in various cities in which she lived.

Jayne was married to Pastor James Gustafson April 26, 1997, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Dickinson. They had lived in Keene, ND, Minot, ND, Monticello, IN, and Sheyenne, ND, where Pastor James had been called as a Lutheran church pastor. In January of 2008, they returned to Minot, where James is serving as associate pastor at First Lutheran Church.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church and its choir, in Minot, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Association of University Women, the ND Cattlewomen's Association, and the Gifts Program. She was also a member and became the first and only North Dakota president of the National Association of Social Workers.

She enjoyed baking, cooking, entertaining, quilting and public speaking. She had a passion for caring for people, especially for those who were homeless or those who were in need of a home. She always wanted to keep on giving as much as she could.

Surviving family includes: husband, Pastor James Gustafson, Minot; sons, Tim (Koreen) Hammel, and their son, Terry, Hot Springs, SD, and J.R. Hammel, Bismarck; step son, Christopher (Melissa) Gustafson, and their children, Chloe and Ryan, Winnebago, WI; step daughters, Jennifer Gustafson and her life partner, Jim Pineau, Gladstone, MI, and Carolyn (Lucas) Cutter, and their children, Emma and Jack, Oshkosh, WI; mother-in-law, Edna Gustafson, St. Paul, MN; sister, Madeline (Don) Preskey, Bowbells, ND, brothers, Larry (Lois) Signalness, Keene, ND, and Lee (Carol) Signalness, Sun River, MT; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jayne was preceded in death by her parents; father-in-law, Paul Gustafson; sister, Ruth Signalness; and "special" aunt, Camella Lawlar.

Funeral: Friday, May 23, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at First Lutheran Church, Minot.

Interment: Shafer Cemetery, Watford City, ND.

Visitation: Thursday from Noon to 6:30 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Prayer Service: Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials are preferred to Gideon's International, Easter Seals, and for Camp Grassick.
