Leona Myrtle Gores, 99, Minot, died Sunday, March 29, 2009 in a Minot nursing care facility.

Leona was born on January 7, 1910 in Layton Township, McHenry County, near Bantry, ND, a daughter of Joseph and Emma (Arvin) Wantz. She was raised and educated in the Bantry area. She graduated from Bantry High School and attended Minot State Teachers College. She then taught in rural school for one year.

On December 27, 1928, she married Henry A. Gores at Cando, ND. Following their marriage, they lived in Cando and Devils Lake, ND. In 1947, they moved to Minot where she has since lived. At one time, Leona managed numerous cream stations throughout the area and worked at Ellison's.

Leona was a chartrer member of Little Flower Catholic Church in Minot where she was a member of the Confraternity of Christian Mothers. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Leona is survived by a brother, Calvin Wantz of Minot and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, and infant daughter, a daughter, Joyce Behm, her brother, Bernard and her sisters, Phoebe Cree and Nora Stiefel, and her parents.

Public Visitation: Wednesday, April 1, 2009, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Mass of Christian Burial: Thursday, April 2, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Little Flower Catholic Church, Minot.

Interment: Woodlawn Cemetery, Bremerton, Washington

Immediately following the funeral mass there will be lunch and fellowship in the school gymnasium, located across the alleyway of the church.
