Helen Ramona Gjerde 1929 2004
Helen was born September 19, 1929, in Tolley, ND, the daughter of Werner and Dora Ostlund. She was raised and educated in Tolley and graduated from Tolley High School. Helen lived in Tolley, where she raised her family, and in 1973 she moved to Alaska. She began working for Alyeska Pipeline in 1976, where she continued to work until the time of her death. Helen was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Anchorage and had worked in the community with United Way Day of Caring, Santa's Secret Tree and the Iditarod. Helen enjoyed reading, gardening and shopping. Her family wrote, "She was strength to all who knew her in good times and in bad. There will always be a place in our hearts for her, and she will be greatly missed by all." Survivors: Daughters, Jeanne Iverson, Anchorage, AK, Kathy Kvelstad, Minot, ND, and Lori Carson, Anchorage; son, David Wherley, Anchorage; grandsons, Robert Iverson, Tolley, ND, Korey and Shawn Kvelstad, both of Devils Lake, Nigel Wherley, Wasilla, AK, and Chris Carson, Anchorage; granddaughters, Deanna Knutson, Bowbells, ND, Katie Kvelstad and Michelle Grubb, both of Minot, and Nicole Wherley, Maui, HI; several great-grandchildren also survive; brother, Roger (Lucille) Ostlund, Bakersfield, CA; sister-in-law, Rose Lance, Billings, MT, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; son, Kevin Wherley, and brothers, Donald, Gordon and John Ostlund. Funeral: Tuesday, December 21, 2004, at 2:00 p.m., at Evangelical Lutheran Church, Tolley, ND. Visitation: Tuesday one hour prior to the service in the church. Burial: Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery,
