Marlys Gjellstad 1922- 2006


Marlys Gjellstad, 84, Velva, died Monday, August 21, 2006 in a Minot Hospital.

Marlys Harriet Gjellstad was born June 2, 1922, to Henry and Annie (Stalheim) Lee on the family farm in Falsen Township, McHenry County. She attended Oak Valley School and graduated from Granville High School in 1941. She attended Minot State College and taught in a number of country schools in McHenry County for five years.

Marlys was baptized and confirmed in the Verendrye Lutheran Church, Verendrye, North Dakota. She was united in marriage to Walter Gjellstad at the Verendrye Lutheran Church on June 19, 1947.

Following their marriage, they purchased the Gjellstad homestead near Verendrye where they raised four children. After farming and ranching for forty years, they moved to Velva, North Dakota in 1987. After fifty years together, Walter passed away in 1997.

She was a member of Stenkjaer Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid of Simcoe, North Dakota. She also was a member of the Karlsruhe VFW Auxiliary, the Velva American Legion Auxiliary, and the Velva Senior Citizens. She held numerous offices in these organizations.

She is survived by her children : Leann (Ted) Dilse, Scranton, ND, Roger (Renae) Gjellstad, Stanley, ND; Laurel (Lee) Bjornstad, Vancouver, WA, and Robert "Yabo" (Donene) Gjellstad, Voltaire, ND; grandchildren; Janelle (Doug) Fitterer, Shannon (Duane) Bowman, Brian Dilse, Robin Gjellstad, Ryan (Beth) Gjellstad, Rhonda (Ryan) Peterson, Eric and Steven Bjornstad, and Jason, Angella and Paul Gjellstad. Great grandchildren: Kenley Bowman, Tyler Gjellstad and Samantha Fitterer. She is also survived by her sister, Verdine (Leland) Sollid of Velva; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Lillian Christopherson; brothers, Harley, Lester and Norlan Lee; and granddaughter, Kristine Dilse.

Funeral: Friday, August 25, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva.

Visitation: Thursday, August 24, 2006 from noon until 5:30 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Velva.

Burial: Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, rural Verendrye at 5 p.m.

Memorials are preferred to Velva Ambulance and Souris Valley Care Center.
