Edythe L. Gessner 1923 - 2005 Edythe L. Gessner, 81, 706 16th Ave. SE Apt. C114, Minot, ND, died Sunday, January 23, 2005 in a Minot Hospital. Edythe was born July 5, 1923, on the family farm near Russell, ND, the daughter of Ernest and Mary (Joern) Gessner. At present she was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Minot. She was a Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Teacher, member of the choir and also organist at the various churches where she lived, and also served on various committees within the church. She was baptized and confirmed in St. John's Lutheran Church, of rural Upham, ND. She received her elementary and high school education in Russell, ND, graduating from High School there. In 1954, she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in elementary education with emphasis on art education and library science from Minot State College. In 1968, she received a Masters Degree from the University of Minnesota with emphasis on curriculum and art education. Her teaching career was spent in various communities, Mouse River District near Kramer, ND, Russell, ND, Devils Lake, ND, Grand Forks Immanuel Lutheran School, Williston, ND and then in 1959 she became a 5th grade teacher in Edison School of Minot and remained there until her retirement in 1987. She had many fond memories of her college life, her teaching career, family and friends, here and there. Edythe's interests were mainly in the arts, doing crafts, water color painting, etc. She has built a replica of her grandfather Gessner's home and had completely furnished it. This replica of her Grandfather's home is now in the Bottineau Historical Museum. She has also written a "Journal of Her Life" from the time she was three years old to the present. She could remember so vividly that far back, and the more she started to write the more memories came back. Her journal also contains drawings of various items used, events, layouts of her birthplace, the house, yard, school, town, church, and innumerable other things. Her volunteer work included doing the window paper announcements of babies birth, poster work at the Trinity Hospital of Minot. She also volunteer in the Graphics Department at Trinity, where all the printing was done. She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Kalhagen, Devils
Lake, ND and a brother-in-law, Arthur Krenz, Minot, ND; nieces
and nephews, Dolores Wuebben, Mary Lou Wentz, Beverly Zaback,
Leon Thiel, Doris (Thiel) Eiseman, Lorna Simmons, Shirley Dosch,
Ronald Krenz, Janice Trempe, Marlene Schmidt, Joanne Amundson,
Orin, Sonja, Gerald and Karen Kalhagen, Many grand and great-grand
nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents,
sisters, Margaret Krueger, Leona Thiel, Bernice Kitzman and Marie
Krenz, nephews, Roland Krueger, Wesley Thiel and Darrell Kitzman.
Burial: St. John's Cemetery, east of Russell, ND at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 27, 2005. Visitation: Wednesday, January 26, 2005 from noon until 7 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND. Officiant: Rev.
