Clarence E. German 1922 - 2004

Clarence E. German, 81, 2500 27th St. NE, Minot, died Sunday, March 28, 2004, in a Minot medical center.

He was born on July 8, 1922, in Glenburn, ND, one of eleven children to Frank and Alma (Koehler) German. He attended and graduated form Glenburn High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy in November 28, 1942, and served as a radar operator on the USS Lexington aircraft carrier. The ship arrived offshore in Japan in time to feel the concussion of the second atomic bomb that ended World War II. His unit received the Presidential Unit Citation and thirteen battle stars. He was honorably discharged from the service on October 29, 1945.

He married Joan "Billie" Woods on February 15, 1946, in White Bear Lake, MN. He later graduated from Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, MN. They came to Minot in 1955 to raise their family. He was employed in auto body repair for several years. He then worked as an auto body instructor in the vocational department of the Minot Public Schools for over 15 years. Following his retirement from education, they continued to live in Minot.

He was a member and 20-year trustee at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Minot. He was a member of the American Legion and John Deere Two-Cylinder Club, both of Minot. In his younger years, he played with a country dance band in the Minot area. He operated a small hobby farm and raised Hereford cattle and Suffolk sheep with his wife. He enjoyed restoring vintage Model T Fords and John Deere tractors. He donated and recently was honored for his donation of one of his vintage truck restorations to the Roosevelt Park Children's Zoo. It is used as an exhibit for the education of children and their enjoyment.

Survivors: wife, Billie, Minot; three daughters, Kathleen German, Eaton, OH, Carolyn (Steve) Blechschmidt, Littleton, CO, and Connie (Gary) Bjornson, Minot; four grandchildren, Nathan Black, Jessica Blechschmidt, Mark and Mia Bjornson; sisters, Evelyn Langbell, Boise, ID, Lorraine Bradley, Denver, CO, Maybelle German, Anchorage, AK, and Ardis Glore, Salem, OR; brothers, Harold (Sunee) German, Boise, and Arden (Shirley) German, Vancouver, WA; numerous nieces and nephews. Clarence was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray and George, and two sisters, Gladys Salseg and Dorothy Kraft.

Memorials are preferred to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, the Souris Valley Humane Society, or to the donor's choice.

Memorial Service: Friday, April 2, 2004, 2:00 p.m., St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Minot.

Visitation: There will be no reviewal, but friends may sign a register on Thursday, April 1, 2004, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND, at a later date.
