David A. Germain, 73, 505 4 Ave. NW, Minot, ND, died Saturday, February 24, 2007 in a Minot medical center.

He was born on March 8, 1933, in Cresbard, SD, a son of Harry and Sylvia (Nelson) Germain. He attended school in Ipswich, SD. During his high school years, he was elected to go to Boys State and he played guard on the South Dakota State Champion Basketball Team of 1952.

After graduating from high school, he attended South Dakota State University as a Linotype student. He served in the Armed Forces from 1952 until 1956. In August of 1956, he came to Minot, ND, and was employed by the Minot Daily News. He served as President of the International Typographical Union for two years.

On June 27, 1964, he married Violet Tohm of Gardena, ND, in St. Leo's Catholic Church. The couple remained in Minot where David continued his employment with The Minot Daily News until his retirement in 1994. In recent years, he spent his summer months enjoying the outdoors, you could usually find him mowing lawn at Roosevelt Park or meeting the guys for coffee at Charlie's Café.

David began his life as a public servant when he joined the US Army in 1952. His dedication to others continued on throughout his lifetime. He was an active member of Little Flower Catholic Church and the Knight of Columbus, where he was recognized as Knight of the Year in 1980. He was an active member of the Minot Eagles Aerie Club. He held various positions including the Eagles Local president, as well as Dakota State president of North Dakota and South Dakota, and he was North Central Regional president, and was named Eagle of the Year in 1971. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge. He was involved with the Minot Recreation Commission where he coached various teams and was involved in the fund raising for the building of the current South Hill Softball Complex. He was a life member of the Parent Teachers Association and was active at Lincoln Elementary School where his daughters went to school. David served as the 7th Ward Alderman for the City of Minot from 1979 to 1991. He was currently a member of the Ward County Water Board. David and his wife Vi were avid supporters of youth activities and rarely missed a basketball game involving Bishop Ryan High School. He volunteered for numerous events and activities throughout the city, including the Norsk Hostfest.

He loved his family and friends and was extremely proud of his four grandchildren. He also enjoyed hosting neighborhood barbecues on his backyard patio, pontooning with his family at Lake Metigoshe and taking winter trips to Arizona when it was 20 below in North Dakota.

He is survived by his wife, Vi of Minot; daughters, Jodi Lynn (Kevin) Ward of Bottineau, ND and DeAnna Marie (Keith) Crandell of Mesa, AZ; his four grandchildren, Quinn David Ward, Drew Duwayne Ward, Brandon Robert Hahn and Brooke Aubrey Crandell; aunts, Marjorie Metcalf, Whittier, CA, and Virginia Ochsendorf, Minneapolis, MN; and uncle, Klem Nelson, San Antonio, TX; and many extended relatives.

David was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harry.

Funeral: Thursday, March 1, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at Little Flower Catholic Church, Minot, ND.

Vigil Prayer Service: Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at 5:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND.

Visitation: Wednesday, February 28, 2007, from noon until 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND.

Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND.
