Hazel G. Gackle, 83, Velva, died Thursday, January 22, 2009 in her home.

Hazel was born September 7, 1925, in Velva, ND, to Benjamin and Lillian (Feige) Michaelson. She was raised on the family farm southwest of Voltaire and attended Voltaire Consolidated School for 11 years. She graduated from Velva High School in 1943. Hazel spent 18 months with her aunt in Portland, OR, and was employed in a Portland shipyard in an essential wartime job. She returned to Velva in 1945 and attended Minot State College.

On November 29, 1946, Hazel was united in marriage in Towner, ND, to Eugene "Gene" Gackle. They lived in Velva, ND, where they very much enjoyed raising their family.

She was a member of the Saint Cecilia's Catholic Church and was active in many church affairs. She taught religion classes for over 25 years, was past president of the Confraternity of Christian Mothers, served as president of the church guild, was a scripture reader, rosary leader and past choir member.

Over the years, Hazel loved being involved in school affairs involving her children, was a Cub Scout Den Mother, served as the president of the Republican Women's Club, was a member of the Strawberry Lake Association and the Velva Senior Citizen's Center. Hazel worked in the office at a local grocery store and was office manager for Mouse River Oil Company, which was the family business.

She found time to express her love of beauty and creativity in painting, decorating, sewing, music, gardening and reading. Hazel was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend who will be deeply missed.

(Nancy) Gackle, Minot, ND; Renee (Ron) Ballou, Lincoln, NE; Gerard (Linda) Gackle, Grand Forks, ND; David (Nancy) Gackle, Aberdeen, SD; Rebecca Gackle, Grand Forks, ND; Mary (David) Anderson, Louisville, KY; Robert (Cheri) Gackle, Velva, ND; Suzanne Watne, Minot, ND; Mark (Chris) Gackle, Prior Lake, MN; 14 Grandchildren; 7 Great-Grandchildren; brother Rudolph Michaelson, Velva, ND; sister Grace Durgin, Reedsport, OR.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Gene; twin sons Timothy and Terry; parents Benjamin and Lillian Michaelson; and brother Chester Michaelson.

Funeral: Monday, January 26, 2009, 10:30 a.m. at Saint Cecilia's Catholic Church, Velva, ND.

Vigil prayer service and visitation: The vigil prayer service will be Sunday at 5:00 p.m. at Saint Cecilia's Catholic Church, Velva, ND. The visitations will be at the church Sunday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Monday, one hour prior to the service.

Burial; Velva Cemetery, Velva, ND, in the spring.
