Floyd Joseph Fredrickson 1919 - 2005

Floyd Joseph Fredrickson, 85, Powers Lake, died Saturday, April 23, 2005, in a Tioga hospital.

He was born on May 29, 1919, on the family farmstead in Thorson Township, ND, the son of Nicholai and Thuri (Medgaard) Fredrickson. He was baptized and confirmed at Scandia Lutheran Church, rural Battle View, ND. He attended Pleasant View rural school in Thorson Township. As a young man he worked on local farms, helping with threshing and other various tasks.

He was inducted into the United States Army in November of 1942, and served as part of an infantry unit assigned to the 9th Armored Division that was active in the Battle of the Bulge. He served 38 months of active duty during World War II and was honorably discharged in February of 1945. He recently received an honorary high school diploma from the United States Government for his service in World War II.

He married Donna Mae Holmes on March 31, 1948, in Kenmare, ND. The couple farmed in Thorson Township from 1947, until retiring in 1982. He was dedicated to his family and loved farm life. He was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend and neighbor. He loved the good earth and all its creatures, with a special love for dogs of which he had several and became very attached.

Floyd was an active member and served several terms as trustee and deacon of the Scandia Lutheran Church. He also served as township clerk for 25 years. Although he was not musical himself, he truly loved good music, especially the fiddle. He had an easy smile and quick and witty sense of humor.

Survivors: wife, Donna, Powers Lake, ND; daughter, Betty Fredrickson (Louis), Regina, Sask.; sons, Terry and Benny (Renae) Fredrickson, all of Powers Lake; four granddaughters, Heather (Spencer) Dyck, Cheryl Fredrickson, Mikayla Fredrickson, and Kendra Fredrickson, three grandsons, Jamey Fredrickson, Nick (Teddi) Fredrickson, and Scott Fredrickson, three great-granddaughters, Jessica Dyck, Shaina Fredrickson, and Savanna Fredrickson, two great-grandsons, Noah Fredrickson and Ashton Dyck; mother-in-law, Lida Schmidtke; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Oscar, Julius, Norman and Arnold; and daughter-in-law, Claudia J. Fredrickson.

Funeral Service: Thursday April 28, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at the Scandia Lutheran Church, rural Battleview, ND.

Visitation: Wednesday, April 27, 2005 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 8 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Powers Lake, ND.

Burial: Scandia Lutheran Cemetery, rural Battleview.
