Beulah C. Francis 1921 - 2008 Beulah Whitt was born September 6, 1921 in Velva, ND, the daughter of Bert and Andrena (Anderson) Whitt. She was raised in Velva and graduated from Velva High School. She attended Minot State Teacher's College and graduated with a degree in elementary education. She later returned there to earn the credits necessary for being a school administrator. On June 5, 1941 Beulah married James Francis at St. Leo's Catholic Church Rectory in Minot. They made their home in Minot and in that same year opened Francis Variety Store. They owned and operated that business until 1954, when they sold the business. In 1967, Beulah started as a substitute teacher at St. Leo's Elementary School. Very soon after she was teaching fulltime, and by 1974, was principal of the school. She retired in 1988 for a short time and was asked to come back to the school in 1991. She retired from St. Leo's in 1994. Her husband James died on September 11, 1998. Following his death she began working at Trinity Homes as an evening housekeeper, where she worked until retiring just four years ago. Beulah was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church, Minot and the Confraternity of Christian Mothers. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and was once nominated for the Women of Distinction Award. She was a wonderful lady who was totally dedicated to the children of St. Leo's. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother who will be deeply missed. Those who shared in her life, children, Michael (Carol) Francis, Prescott, AZ, Maurice (Rhonda) Francis, Minot, ND, Millicent (Charles) LaPierre, Underhill, VT, Mary (Dan) Schmidt, Burlington, ND, Timothy Francis, Rockport, MO and Cecilia (Kevin) Ziegler, Bismarck, ND; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Beulah was preceded in death by her husband, James Francis; three month old son, Matthew Clyde Francis; parents, Bert and Andrena Whitt; sisters, Lucille Whitt, Pearl Whitt and Lola Demke. Funeral: Thursday, September 18, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Minot. Visitation and vigil prayer service: Visitation will be Wednesday, September 17, 2008, from noon to 7:00 p.m. with the vigil prayer service at 7:00 p.m. all at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
