Virgil Floyd, 82, Minot, ND, died Tuesday, March 17, 2009, in a Minot nursing home.

Virgil Alton Floyd was born February 23, 1927, on the family farm located in Antler Township of Bottineau County, ND, to Aubrey and Stella (Engstrom) Floyd. He was the oldest of four living children. He attended Antler Public School through the eighth grade and then left school to start farming. He put in his first crop of flax in 1941. In 1946, he passed his physical at Fort Snelling, MN, but was never called to service.

Virgil met Clara Jespersen in 1951, and they were married at the Jespersen family home on October 9, 1952. They made their home on the Floyd family farm located west of Antler, ND. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on October 9, 2002.

Along with farming, from the fall of 1957 until 1959, he worked general labor and as a jackhammer at the new Minot Air Force Base. (I'm sure most know of the drive down the air strip) He started working in the oil fields in the Newburg area in 1959 and in the winters of 1961-62, hauled crude oil from the Haas Fields continued farming with his father and brother, Dale. In 1958, they started farming across the line in Canada. In 1962, the youngest brother, Donald, returned from the service and they added milk cows along with the stock cows. They continued to farm in Canada through 1966 and then back in 1970 to put in one last crop. He and Clara received the Soil Conservation Award in 1976. After 43 years of farming, they had their farm auction in the fall of 1995, and then moved to 2224 Skyline Drive in Minot. In the fall of 2004, they moved to 1008 34th Ave SW. Clara passed away March 24, 2006. Following the death of his wife, Virgil then moved to The View in Minot and had resided there until the time of his passing.

He was a life member of the Antler Community Church, and was a member of the Antler Senior Citizens Club, Antler Public School Board, the Antler Elevator Board and the Antler Township Board. He was also a member of the Eagles Aerie and the Elks Lodge and had attended Bethel Free Lutheran Church, all of Minot.

Virgil was well known for his stories and jokes. Please remember them and repeat what you can and have another laugh along with him. Also when you bring out the deck of cards, please have a card game in memory of Virgil and Clara. Don't forget to have the coffee on. He was always a big man and a hard and honest worker. He will be greatly missed. Thank you for all your prayers and thoughts during this time.
