Duane S. "Dewey" Flom, 86, Minot, died Thursday, October 23, 2008 in a Minot hospital.

Duane was born July 26, 1922 in Parshall, ND, the son of Selmer and Gurine (Huus) Flom. He was raised in the Plaza area and graduated from Plaza High School.

On December 7, 1942 he enlisted in the United States Army. He served in Rhineland and Central Europe with the Service Company 180th Infantry, as an ammunition truck driver during World War II. Duane earned the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal, European, African, Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal. He was honorably discharged on November 15, 1945.

Duane married Ardice Heere on July 31, 1944 in Havre, MT. He worked as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service for several years. He then drove truck for Gamble Robinson and later Frito Lay. His wife Ardice died on September 7, 1957.

In May of 1968 Duane married Donna (Anderson) Herslip in Minot, ND. They made their home in Minot and Duane worked as a certified nursing assistant at Trinity Nursing Home for 25 years until his retirement. Following retirement he drove taxi for several years. His wife Donna died October 9, 2001. Duane moved into Trinity Homes in 2003.

Duane was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Minot, where he loved attending church and never missed a Sunday. He enjoyed outings with his children and grandchildren and loved playing cards and cribbage. Duane was a wonderful, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be deeply missed.

Those who shared in his life, sons, Gerald Flom, Minot, Robert Gruenberg, Bismarck, Dennis (Melissa) Flom, Lakeville, MN; daughters, Sandra (Vince) Collette, Wilmington, NC, Pamela (Keith) Wold and Barbara Williams, all of Minot; stepsons, Ray (Laurie) Herslip, Deering, Ken (Janelle) Herslip, Minot and Rollie (Rita) Herslip, Hazard, KY; stepdaughter, Kathy (Ray) Dockter, Shakopee, MN; son-in-law James Stenvold, Minot, grandchildren, Sean Franklin, Stephanie Lawson, Trisha Koop, Krista Downs, Lynette Couat, Robert Stenvold, Trish Strachen, Jeremy Flom, Michelle Flom, Kelly Flom, Ashley Flom, Justin Gruenberg, Josh Gruenberg, Matthew Flom and Dessa Flom; 18 great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; brothers, Gordon (Lois) Flom, Las Vegas, NV, Selmer Flom and Frank (Judy) Flom, all in Minot and Roger (Mary) Flom of Ohio; sisters, Geanne Pankratz, Minot, Marvel Dornfeld, Kalispell, MT and Diane (Ken) Ostby, Fargo, ND; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ardice and his second wife, Donna; his daughter, Paula Stenvold; his parents, Selmer and Gurine Flom; brother, Odell Flom; sisters, Lois Gruenberg and Mary Weiskopf.

Funeral: Monday, October 27, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Minot, ND.

Visitation: Sunday, October 26, 2008, from noon to 5:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND.

Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND.
