Lawrence Flatla 1918 - 2009 He enlisted in the United States Army April 24, 1941. He proudly served his country during WWII and during his service, he escorted deceased soldiers to their families through out the United States. He was honorably discharged as a 1st Sergeant. On his return home, he took over the family farm near Bergen. Lawrence married Florence M. Nelson on September 19, 1945, in Sidney, Montana. They made their home in rural Bergen, N.D. and worked the family farm. He also worked as an operator from 1953-1975 at Central Power Electric Company. He was past Post Commander of the Velva American Legion Post #39, was on the Lake Hester Township Board for many years, and belonged to the Bergen, Hjerdahl, and Oak Valley Lutheran churches. In life his greatest joy was his 15 grandchildren who loved him dearly and always enjoyed playing and having adventures with him. Florence was the love of his life 'till the end. Surviving family includes: his loving wife of 64 years, Florence; children, Woodrow Flatla, Now Then, MN, Lynette (Lawren) Wold, Minot, Vincent (Debra) Flatla, Buffalo, MN, Nancy (Michael) Hartgrove, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Cyndee Williams, Velva, and Rebecca (Keith) Cederstrom, Velva; grandchildren, Stephanie and Tausha Flatla, Minneapolis; Christopher (Susan) Wold, London, England, Nathan Wold, New York City, NY, Mackenzie Wold, Fargo; Dan (Sunny) Flatla, Sterling, Virginia, Joshua Flatla, Minnetonka, MN, Luke Flatla, Minneapolis, MN, Whitney Flatla, Grand Forks; Jessica Hartgrove, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Matthew Hartgrove, Winnipeg, Manitoba; Meghann Cederstrom, Denver, Rachael Cederstrom, Fargo, Mikel Cederstrom, Velva; great-grandchildren, Anna Wold, Cailin and Zoe Flatla; sister, Mona Kramer, California; and survived by several nieces and nephews. Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, Halvor and Julia Flatla; an infant brother, brother, Joseph; sisters, Anna Orheim, Liala Chittester, and Ruth Mangan; granddaughter, Jennifer Williams; son-in-law, Jerry Williams; great-granddaughter, Olyvia Hartgrove-Coy; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Kaare Orheim, Don Mangan, Don Kramer, Glen Chittester, Kermit and Ruth Fadness, Ernest and Jean Nelson, Willard and Helen Nelson, and Leslie Nelson. June 26, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva.
