Darrell Fitchner, 1105-11th Ave. SE, Minot, N.D., formerly of Deering, N.D, died Friday, July 15, 2005, in a Minot hospital.

Darrell was born Jan. 10, 1937, on the family farm near Deering in McHenry County, the son of John and Mina Fitchner. He grew up there and later moved to Minot with his mother. After living with his mother for many years, he moved to Trinity Nursing Home in Minot and then to a group home in Minot. Darrell was born with Down Syndrome, and was involved in programs at the Minot Vocational Workshop.

Darrell loved music and playing harmonica for his friends and family. The highlight of his life was a trip to Tennessee to Nashville and Memphis, where he visited the Grand Ole Opry and Graceland. Darrell was a big fan of Elvis Presley, and collected Elvis Presley memorabilia.
He also visited Branson, Mo., in May 2001, and had attended Metigoshe Bible Camp at Pelican Lake, near Bottineau, N.D., for many years and camp at Laka Sakakawea in the Garrison, N.D., area. Darrell attended Our Savior Lutheran Church, Minot.
Darrellás eyes twinkled when he laughed, and he had a good sense of humor. He was an active member of the Second Story Social Club in Minot and enjoyed various activities, including dances, with his friends and with his girlfriend, Carol Ehry. He shared an apartment for a time with one of his friends, Buddy Hatley.

Survivors: niece and legal guardian, Debbie Sandvold, and her husband Jeff, Minot; great-nephew, Jared Sandvold, Minot; great-niece, MaKayla Sandvold, Minot; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Fitchner, Minot; aunt, May Jenson, Minot; several cousins; girlfriend, Carol Ehry, Minot.

Darrell was preceded in death by his father in 1967; his mother in February 1991; his brother, Leland, July 17, 1995; his sister, Patricia "Pat" Franzen in March 1999; and by his brother-in-law, Leland "Lee" Franzen, in February 1999 and several aunts and uncles.

Funeral: Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at 1:30 p.m. in Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park cemetery, Minot.

Visitation: Tuesday, July 19, 2005, from noon until 7 p.m. and on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until service time at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Memorials are preferred to Second Story Social Club, the Minot Vocational Workshop and to Souris Valley Humane Society, all Minot.
