Walter J. Finke 1914 - 2010
Walter J. Finke, of Minot, ND, at the age of 96, passed away at Trinity hospital on July 24, 2010 when his Lord called him home. Walter married Marion I. Rollman on June 28, 1938. He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Upham where he served on the building committee that built the present church structure that stands there today. In 1947, Walter expanded his farming operation and moved the family to Kramer, ND, where he became a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Kramer. He also served for a time as president of the Kramer school board. Walter received the Turtle Mountain soil conservation award in 1956 for his farming practices. His main concern in farming was always to protect and preserve the land. Walter retired from farming in 1967 and turned the farming operation over to one of his sons. He started up the Travel land RV business in the Minot area in the early 70’s, which was a successful business during the time that he ran it. When he sold the business, he retired in the Minot area, and continued to serve his Lord as a member of the St Paul’s Lutheran Church of Minot. Walter always enjoyed a good conversation, flying his plane, boating, hunting with friends, and travelling. He is survived by his five children, Gary R. (Beverly) Finke of Thief River Falls, Minnesota, Betty L. (Rev. Dale) Evanson of Waterford, Michigan, William L. (Sandra) Finke of Kramer, ND, Bruce A. (Linda) Finke of Chicago, Illinois; and David G. (Maureen) Finke of St. Paul, Minnesota; ten grandchildren; twenty one great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Jonathan Evanson, who passed away July 1, 1975; brother, Edwin H. Finke; sister, Elsie R. Simms; and an infant sister. Funeral: Thursday, July 29, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Minot.
