Harold E. Farstad 1913 - 2010

Harold Edgar Farstad was born on March 8, 1913, a son of Henry and Adina Farstad, on the homestead north of Battle View, ND.  He attended elementary school in Battle View and high school in Powers Lake.

Harold started to farm in 1931 on the land owned by his father.  Besides his love of farming, Harold greatly enjoyed playing baseball and riding horseback.

On October 5, 1940, he was united in marriage to Inga Elizabeth Olson in Columbus, ND.  After returning from their honeymoon trip to the Black Hills, they started their lifelong partnership in farming. 

Besides being a farmer, Harold was also a mail carrier and worked on the crew that paved Highway 50 east of Powers Lake.  Harold also helped his father and brother in their hardware, implement and bulk oil businesses.

Harold and Inga were active members of Bethel Lutheran Church in Battle View.  He also served as a member of the Powers Lake School Board.  Harold and Inga wintered in Arizona for many years and after retiring from farming, they moved to Powers Lake where they became active participants in the Senior Citizens Center.  In 2007 they became residents of Edgewood Vista in Minot, ND.

Some of Harold’s favorite pastimes were watching baseball, playing cards and shooting pool.  He always enjoyed visits with his daughters and their families and with friends and neighbors.

Those who had the privilege of sharing his life:

His wife of 68 years, Inga; daughters Bonnie (Lowell) Johnson, Betty (John Riley) Holmen and Sandra (Steve) Bakken.  He had a special bond with each of his nine grandchildren:  David, Scott and Mark Johnson; John and Jeff Holmen, Stephanie Walker; Christopher and Chad Bakken,  and Angela Walen;  This same bond held true for his twenty great-grandchildren:  Blake, Tyesha and Amanda Johnson; Andrew Johnson; Reid and Avery Johnson; Zachary, Gabriella, Sophia and Anya Holmen; Alexandra and Michael Holmen; Jake, Paxton and Braeden Walker; Chase Callison, Baylee Bakken; Cody Bakken, Serena Walen, and Riley Shuey.  Brother-in-law:  Elmer Olson; sister-in-law:  Alice Running Kessler, along with nephews and nieces also survive.

Harold was preceded in death by his wife Inga, daughter Susan Irene, parents Henry and Adina, brother Oliver, and sister Eleanor.

Visitation: Thursday, June 10, 2010 from 4 until 7 pm at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Powers Lake, ND

Funeral Service: Friday, June 11, 2010 at 2 pm at the Battle View Lutheran Church, Battleview, ND

Burial: Bethel Lutheran Cemetery, Battleview, ND
