Walfred "Wally"
Fahlgren 1911 - 2002 Walfred "Wally" Otis Fahlgren, 91, 1114 Roberts Street, Minot, died Sunday, August 11, 2002 in a Minot Nursing Home. Walfred was born on March 11, 1911, at Washburn, ND, to Edwin and Mary (Johnson) Fahlgren. He grew up in Washburn, attending schools there. He worked on area farms before entering the US Army in March of 1942. He served in the European Theater, serving at Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe with the 343rd Artillery Battalion and also with Company B, 5th Tank battalion of the 90th Division. He served in the Battle of the Bulge and was part of the D-day invasion. He was awarded a good conduct medal, five bronze service arrowheads and the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with three overseas service bars. He was discharged on October 27, 1945 and went to work for the Community Telephone of Washburn. He transferred to the North Dakota Telephone Company in Westhope in September of 1946. In January of 1947, he moved to Mohall where North Dakota Telephone had a district office. North Dakota Telephone had a number of telephone exchanges in the Mohall area and he was in charge of these exchanges. On October 31, 1948, he married Erma Miller of Mohall in Minot. In 1955, Souris River Telephone purchased the North Dakota Telephone properties and Wally began duties with Souris River. He was in the Right-of-Way Department for three and one half years. He was then given charge of the warehouse and materials distribution. They moved to Minot in 1956. He retired from Souris River Telephone on March 31, 1981 and continued to live in Minot. He entered the Trinity Homes on October 11, 2000. Wally traveled all the United States but Hawaii and traveled most of Canada and in Mexico. After Wally's retirement from Souris River Telephone, he was a caretaker at Camp Owetti. He also showed cocker spaniels in dog shows in Minnesota, North Dakota and Canada. Wally and Erma owned a cabin at Mouse River Park for over 40 years. Wally was a member of Vincent United Methodist Church, Minot and was a life member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Minot Senior Citizens and the Elks. He was also a member of the 90th Division Association, the AARP, the Eagles Aerie and the men's bowling association, DIM League all of Minot and was awarded the Minot Bowling Association Merit Award in 1984. Survivors: wife, Erma Fahlgren, Minot; sister, Mrs. Kenneth (Lettie) Christianson, Washburn, ND; numerous nieces and nephews and four Godchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters. Funeral: 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August 14, 2002 at Vincent United Methodist Church, Minot, ND Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND Visitation: Tuesday, today, from noon until 7 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND.
