Martin was born on December 29, 1923, in Balfour, ND, the son of Otto and Dorthea (Garlie) Evenrud. He grew up on a farm northwest of Balfour and graduated from Balfour High School in 1942. He worked for area farmers and entered the United States Navy where he served for three years. After his honorable discharge from the Navy Martin attended Wahpeton State School of Science and studied sheet metal and air conditioning. He also attended Minot State Teachers College for one semester. Martin taught school for one year at a country school house near Balfour.

On July 19, 1953, Martin robbed the cradle and married the love of his life Carol Ann Braaten. They made their home in Balfour where Martin started working for Standard Oil as a bulk agent, which eventually became Evenrud Oil Company. He always carried Dentyne gum to give to his kids and patrons. Martin worked until 1985 when his son, Tom took over the business.

Martin moved to Minot in 2001 and loved visiting people in the nursing homes. Carol died on June 27, 2001.

Martin loved to go to basketball games, especially cheering on the Balfour Hornets. He loved serving his family and would find projects to do in the yard or many times be doing the dishes. His hobbies were coin collecting, using his metal detector, and taking pictures of everyone. He took time to know all of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and took time to visit them through each year. He cherished their time together. He also loved eating out around Minot, fishing, hunting and playing golf. In recent years, he became the King of Rummycube, rummy board game, and would play it with anyone until the wee hours of the morning. Ice cream was his favorite food; he could eat a lot of it anytime.
