Hazel J. Essen, 79, Battleview, died Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at her farm near Lignite.

Hazel June Swanson was born March 11, 1929 at Flaxton, ND, the daughter of Herman and Caroline (Myren) Swanson. She was raised in Flaxton and confirmed in 1945 at United Lutheran Church, Flaxton. She graduated from Flaxton High School in 1947. Hazel worked in cafes from the seventh grade until 1952.

On August 17, 1952 Hazel married Ernest Essen at Flaxton, ND. Following their marriage they lived at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City South Dakota, where Ernest was stationed. He later served overseas and Hazel moved back to Flaxton. Following his discharge from the service in 1955 they made their home in Flaxton and later moved to Powers Lake, where they farmed for seven years. In 1965 they moved to Lignite where they farmed and ranched until 1996, when they retired and moved to Battleview. Ernest died on November 3, 1998.

Hazel enjoyed dancing, crocheting, knitting, reading, farming, yard work and gardening. She was a charter member of United Lutheran Church, Flaxton, where she taught Sunday school for 17 years. In her younger days, Hazel was a member of the Happy Workers 4-H for nine years and a 4-H leader for three years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, S.M. Foote Post #161, Flaxton and served 30 years as Secretary Treasurer for the Burke County Farmers Union. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Powers Lake.

Those who shared in her life, sons, Duane Essen, Powers Lake, ND and David (Lori) Essen, Fargo, ND; grandchildren, Meagen and Dylan Essen; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins survive.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest; parents, Herman and Caroline Swanson and sister, Cora Koster.

Funeral: Saturday, December 6, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Powers Lake, ND.

Visitation and prayer service: Visitation will be Friday, December 5, 2008 (today) from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m., all at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Powers Lake, ND.

Burial: Saturday at 1:45 p.m. at the Flaxton Cemetery, Flaxton, ND.
