Hilda Emma Engstrom 1906 - 2002 Hilda Emma Engstrom, 95, a long time resident of Portal, ND, died Sunday, November 24, 2002, in a Minot Nursing Home. Hilda was born November 25, 1906, in a farmhouse beside Highway 52, four miles south of Portal, the daughter of Charles and Marie (Schilke) Saar. She attended elementary school three miles west of the farm and then attended grades 5 through 12 at Portal where she graduated in 1925. She attended the State Normal School at Minot and then taught in rural schools at Wildrose, Bowbells and Lignite. Hilda and Clarence Engstrom were married in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Flaxton on October 29, 1929. They started out farming but the drought years ended that almost before it was started. They then moved into Portal and started a trucking business and operated it until 1946 when they bought Reite's Drug Store in Portal. They operated it as the Engstrom Store for 21 years. Clarence died on November 22, 1978. Hilda was elected Portal City Treasurer in 1946 and was also an active member of the Crochet Club, the Gateway City Homemakers and the Church Ladies Aid. She was a life-long member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Flaxton and at one time it was also of Portal. She was talented at creating beautiful crocheted pieces for her family, friends and strangers. The only place she lived was in Portal until 1999 when, for health reasons, she moved to Minot. She resided at the Terrace Apartments and in July of 2001, she moved to Trinity Homes. Survivors include five children, Wesley (Carole) Engstrom, Liberty, WA, Lois Foster, Roseville, CA, Dale (Diane) Engstrom, Kingman, AZ, Mary (Keith) Herbold, Olympia Fields, IL, and Connie (Dennis) Gustafson, Minot; ten grandchildren, Marvin (Heather) Engstrom, Brett Engstrom, Charlene (John) Bagaason, Tammey Foster, Tonya (Bill) Wolfe, Bradley (Laura) Engstrom, James (Cara) Engstrom, Tracey (Paul) Brownlee, Tucker (Jill) Herbold, and Joshua Herbold; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Lillian Francis, Seattle, WA, Adeline Sheriff, Long Beach, CA, Ruth Osborn, Port Angeles, WA, and Charlotte Snider, Van Buren, MO; one brother, Arthur Saar, Port Angeles, WA. Her parents, husband, one brother, Walter Saar, and three sisters, Louise Saar, Edith Williams, and Mabel Saar preceded her in death. Funeral: Friday, November 29, 2002, at 10:30 am at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Flaxton, ND. Visitation: Wednesday, November 27, 2002 from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, and Friday 1 hour prior to the service at the church in Flaxton. Burial: Portal Cemetery.
