Ella Miller 1897 - 2001
Ella Miller was born December 1, 1897 to John and Elizabeth (Duesch) Hoerter, on a homestead in the Souris River Valley near what is now Lake Darling .She was raised and educated in the St. Henry's Catholic Church area of rural Foxholm. She met and married Aloys Ollie Miller on September 6, 1916.They farmed in the Foxholm area until 1936. They purchased the bar in Foxholm from John Gruber. For a short time, they were also co-owners of the Carpio Bar in partnership with Walt and Velga Liebel. Ella opened Miller's Cafe in 1947, and continued to operate it until Ollie passed away in 1962. She remained as proprietor of Miller's Bar until it burned in 1985, for a total of 48 years in the business. Ella was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Foxholm. She was a charter member of the Christian Mother's Club and for many years was the official gravy maker for their annual roast beef dinner. Known far and wide as "Ma Miller", Ella accumulated a host of friends and acquaintances during the years that she served the public. Evidence of this surfaced when she celebrated her 100th birthday. Greetings came from all across the United States and Canada, as well. Ella was a whist player and enjoyed the game up to the time of her death. She also loved to dance, was a great cook and an avid reader! Ella lived her entire life in Foxholm until February 2000 when she moved into Barb Enney's Foster Care Home in Burlington. Prior to her move, Jack Messer, her grandson, was her caretaker. Survivors: daughters, Connie Stammen, Minot, and Myrna Messer and husband Ray, Derby, KS; sons, Francis Miller, Burlington, and Alvin Miller, Foxholm; sister, Mary Busch, Chino, CA; 23 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Ella was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ollie; sons, Ralph and Harold; daughter, Evelyn; daughters-in-law, Mary Ann Miller and Edith Miller, sons-in-law, Ambrose Stammen and Leonard Haider; grandson, Mike Miller (Alvin); brothers, Joe and Nick Hoerter; and sisters: Rose Busch, Anna Benwell and Elizabeth Hoerter.
