Mervin Ellingson 1923 - 2010

Mervin E. Ellingson was born August 21, 1923, in Mohall, ND.  He was the son of John Morris and Mae (Haugen) Elling, who emigrated from Norway to Mohall. Upon arriving to the United States, his father changed their last name to Ellingson.   He was raised and educated in Mohall with his siblings and graduated Mohall High School, where he served as class president and was the captain of the football team.

He enlisted in the United States Army May 18, 1943. He proudly served his country during WWII and was stationed in the Philippines and in Japan. He was trained as a clerk typist, but mainly served as a medic. He was awarded the Philippine Liberation Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged March 15, 1946.  

Following his honorable discharge, he attended the North Dakota State College in Fargo, where he attended for four years and was taking courses in pre-Medicine.

While being a patient at the Veteran’s Hospital in Minot, he met his future wife, Pauline H. (Butt) Siders. They were later married on December 14, 1953, in Fargo, ND. In 1951, Mervin began working for the Great Northern Railroad/Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railroad both as a brakeman and conductor until his retirement in 1983. During this time he had also served a term as City Alderman.

Following his retirement, he enjoyed being one of the engineers for the mini-train at Roosevelt Park, giving rides to the many visitors. He also worked part-time at the Minot Eagles Club as a greeter which allowed him to visit and have conversation with all the people arriving. He loved to visit.

Pauline passed away August 26, 2003. Mervin had continued to reside at his home since, assisted by his son, John.

Surviving family includes:  children, Janice Weller, Arizona, Gwen Steinberg, Minot, Gary Ellingson, Minot, Bruce Ellingson, Los Angeles, CA, Becky Ellingson, Sioux Falls, SD, Dale (Karen) Ellingson, Los Angeles, CA, Diane (Gary) Deschambault, Minot, John Ellingson, Minot, Jeff Ellingson, Minneapolis, MN, and Cory Ellingson, Minot, ND; grandchildren, Elizabeth Weller; Jesse King; Krishnaya, Baladeva and Chaitanya Ellingson; Shawn, Skyler, Weston and Mason Ellingson; Briana, Danielle, and Eric Deschambault, Mikayla and Deanna Ellingson; great-grandson, Izaak Ellingson; brother, Myron (Faye) Ellingson, Portland, OR, sister, Mayme (George) Morrison, North Kingston, RI; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mervin was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Pauline; brother, Donald; daughter-in-law, Mari (Kleppen) Ellingson.

Funeral: Monday, October 11, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home Chapel, Minot.

Interment:
  Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot, ND.

Visitation: 
Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
