Serena J. Elberg 1908 - 2003 Serena J. Elberg, 94, 600 S. Main, Minot, died Monday, January 20, 2003, in a Minot nursing care facility. She was born March 17, 1908, in the homestead claim shantee of her parents, Hans and Hansina (Botten) Rapp, in Renville County, north of Carpio, ND. She attended country school near her home. She attended Minot State Teachers College, and received her teaching certificate. She taught school at Callahan Township Country School for several years. She married Merrel Elberg on June 28, 1934, in Carpio, ND. They lived and farmed north of Carpio for a time. In the mid-1940's, they moved to Minot, and continued to operate the farm in Carpio. Serena worked at Ramstad Middle School for many years, and part time at the Singer Sewing Machine Shop in Minot. In 1978, they transferred interest in their farm to their son, Derrel. Her husband, Merrel, died on October 12, 1984. Serena continued to live in Minot for the remainder of her life. She was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church, and was very involved in the church throughout the course of her and Merrel's married lives. They were instrumental in the construction of the church parsonage, as well as many other projects. She was a member of the Callahan Township Homemakers Club. She enjoyed doing handy work and crocheting in her spare time. Survivors: son, Derrel Elberg, Carpio; two granddaughters, Denae Elberg and Dena Johnson, both of Minot; twin great-granddaughters, Kennedy and Riley Blackburn; two sisters, June Rapp and Agnetta Riester, both of Tucson, AZ; brother-in-law, Lowell Elberg and wife Darlene, Minot; sister-in-law Ruth Vaagen and husband Orville, Lansford, ND; numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Her husband, Merrel, her parents, and three sisters, Ella Gibbons, Hazel Vehslage and Harriet Johnson, preceded her in death. Funeral Service: Thursday, January 23, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND.
