Waine Eklund 1946 - 2011

Waine Eklund PhotoWaine Eklund, 65, Burlington, ND, formerly of Kenmare, ND, died Tuesday, September 27, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer. 

Waine Roy Eklund was born August 27, 1946, a son of Arthur A. and Arlene J. (Swenson) Eklund, in Kenmare, ND.  He was raised for a time in Kandyohi Township and later moved with his family to Bowbells.  In 1971, he moved to Kenmare.  He married Jean Ann Nordstrom on December 9, 1972.  They were married for 35 years.

Waine was drafted into the United States Army in January, 1966. He was honorably discharged in January, 1968.  He was awarded Sharpshooter (Rifle), NDSM, and Good Conduct Medal (1st Award). 

Following his honorable discharge, he worked for Burke County as an equipment operator, Whitted Construction running heavy equipment, Jim Bohl Trucking as truck driver, Soo Line Railroad as a Car Knocker, and Gooseneck Implement as a mechanic. Throughout his life, he worked as a welder. He learned the trade from his uncle, Vern Eklund, while working for Eklund Blacksmith. In 1982, he purchased the business from his uncle and named it Eklund Welding. In 2000, he moved to Burlington, where he continued his career as a welder. 

While living in Kenmare, he was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church, the Little Butte Saddle Club, and the American Legion. He was an active member of the NODAK Race Club and at one time held an office and board position. From 1978 to 2000, he volunteered with the Kenmare Fire Department, and served as Fire Chief from 1993 to 1996. He also volunteered many years with the Kenmare Ambulance both as a responder and committee member.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and loved his pets and horses. In his younger years, he enjoyed snowmobiling and trapping. He and his son, Kevin, formed K & W Racing.  They have been racing together for 20 years.

His loving family includes:  daughter, Kim (Matt) Henke, Shakopee, MN; son, Kevin (Jami) Eklund, Sawyer, ND; grandchildren, Shelby and Mason Henke; and Kyle and Kaci Eklund;
mother, Arlene, Crosby, ND; sister, Juli (Darrell) Brenno, Columbus; brother, Dan (Amy) Eklund, Columbus; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Waine was preceded in death by his father; aunt; and uncles.

Funeral: Saturday, October 1, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Kenmare.

Interment:
  Saturday at 1:30 pm at Nazareth Cemetery, rural Powers Lake/Coteau, ND.

Visitation: 
Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Kenmare.

Family Prayer Service
: Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Kenmare. 

Memorials
: In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
