Dorothy N. Effertz 1913 - 2003 Dorothy N. Effertz, 89, 11420 20th Ave SE, Minot, died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, from a stroke, in a Minot hospital. Dorothy Naomi (Tompkins) Effertz was born September 26, 1913, in the family farmhouse near Sawyer, ND (on the old "Dave Whaley place"), the daughter of Alonzo Leroy and Mary Emlin (Edwards) Tompkins. She was raised and educated in Sawyer. She worked as a medical laboratory and radiologic technician in Everett, WA. In 1936, she returned to Sawyer and married Marcus F. Effertz on February 12, 1936, in Minot. Mark and Dot established their rural Minot farm home in 1939, where Dorothy has resided until her death. Dorothy was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church in Minot, the Sawyer Cemetery Association and the Surrey Senior Citizens. In her later years, she enjoyed writing poetry and frequently made fudge, which she shared with family and friends. Survivors: sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph (Fran) Effertz, Florissant, MO and Timothy (Arlis) Effertz, Surrey; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Jenine "Jeanie" (James) White, Harrah, OK, Carol (Robert) Schwan, Minot, and Susan Effertz (Charles Kuether), Great Falls, MT; nine grandchildren, Scott Effertz, Kathleen (Gregory) Harger, Debora (John) Murray, Dale (Lorilyn) Schwan, Pat (Colleen) Schwan, Karen (Mike) Holman, Robin (Cliff) Brown, Roger (Kim) White and Elizabeth Effertz; 15 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, including Lonnie Tompkins, Minot, Naomi (Jell) Sandbak and Marian Sweeney, both of the Seattle area and many members of the Effertz clan and their extended families. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marcus F. Effertz, who passed away in 1991, and her siblings, Vern, Ernest, Paul and baby Boyd. Funeral: Saturday, July 26, 2003, at 10:30 am at St. John's Catholic Church, Minot. Visitation: Friday, July 25, 2003, from 2:00 until 7:00 pm at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot. Rosary: Friday at 7:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial: Sawyer Community Cemetery, Sawyer, ND at 2:00 pm.
