Verna Douts 1919 - 2006

Verna Douts, 87, Powers Lake, ND, died Monday, October 30, 2006 in the Tioga Medical Center, Tioga, ND.

Verna was born February 25, 1919 in Battleview, ND to Robert and Anna (Olson) Blomquist. She graduated from Powers Lake High School and attended Minot State College for two years where she earned her teaching certificate. She taught at Lignite, Stanley and Boise, Idaho.

Verna married John Douts on September 22, 1945, at Mt. Nebo, PA. In November of 1946, they moved to Powers Lake, ND, where they started their own business, Tri Our Electric. They retired on January 1, 1982, after being in the business for 36 years. The business then continued to the second generation, as her son, Jake, took over the day to day operations. John died June 23, 2006.

Verna was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Powers Lake, where she served as Sunday School Superintendent for over 20 years. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Civic Club, both in Powers Lake.

Verna enjoyed baking and having tea with her friends. She was known for visiting the sick and shut-ins, and giving many of them her handmade pressed flower cards. She enjoyed her family and especially her grandchildren. Verna was blessed with her first great-granddaughter, Tayah Westerness in September of 2006.

Survivors: Daughter, Joanne McCarty, York, ND; son, John "Jake" (Diane) Douts, Powers Lake, ND; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Ashley McCarty; and Naomi (Ryan) Westerness, Daniel, Rachel, and Mark Douts; one great-granddaughter, Tayah Westerness; sister-in-law, Bernice Carlson, Powers Lake, ND; brother-in-law, Major General W.F. Simlik, (Ret.) Carlsbad, CA; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Verna was preceded in death by her husband, John; daughter, Judy Andersen; son-in-law, John McCarty; her parents; brothers, Elmer and Clifford Blomquist and sister, Ethel Simlik.

Funeral: Saturday, November 4, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Powers Lake, ND.

Visitation and Prayer Service: Visitation Friday from 2:00 to 7:30 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Powers Lake, ND.

Burial: Bethel Lutheran Cemetery, Battleview, ND.
