John Douts 1920 - 2006 John Luther Douts was born on March 15, 1920, the son of Emerson and Mary (Walton) Douts at Mt. Nebo, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Millersville High School, Millersville, PA, in 1938. He enlisted in the United States Air Force on July 8, 1941. He attended electronics school to become a radio operator, and proudly served his country during WWII in England. He served with the 569th Bombardment Squadron, 390th Bombardment Group. He was honorably discharged on September 8, 1945. John married Verna Blomquist on September 22, 1945, at Mt. Nebo, PA. In November of 1946, they moved to Powers Lake, ND, where they started their own business, Tri Our Electric. He was engaged in electrical contracting, retail appliance and furniture sales. He retired in 1982, after 36 years as a master electrician. The business then continued to the second generation, as his son, Jake, took over the day to day operations. He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, the American Legion, the VFW, and the DAV, all of Powers Lake. John was very active in community affairs, as he had served as a city councilman and mayor for many years. In 1966, while he was mayor, Powers Lake was awarded the grand prize in the North Dakota Community Betterment Contest. Powers Lake was picked as the most progressive community in North Dakota. That same year, John was the runner-up "Man of the Year" in North Dakota and was given the North Dakota Leadership Award by then Gov. Guy. He enjoyed woodworking in his shop, hunting, fishing, and was known for his practical jokes. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Surviving family includes: his loving wife of 60 years, Verna, Powers Lake, ND; daughter, Joanne McCarty, York, ND; son, John "Jake" (Diane) Douts, Powers Lake, ND; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Ashley McCarty; and Naomi (Ryan) Westerness, Daniel, Rachel, and Mark Douts; sisters, Jane Tomlinson, Pequea, PA, and Rebecca Miller, Quarryville, PA; brother, Charles Douts, Washington Boro, PA; and numerous nieces, and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Judy Andersen; son-in-law, John McCarty, and brother, Elmer Douts. Funeral: Monday, June 26, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy
