Alfred Dockter 1916- 2006

Alfred C. Dockter, 90, Granville, died Sunday, May 14, 2006 in a Minot hospital.

Alfred was born March 30, 1916 on the family homestead north of Drake, ND, the son of Chris and Mary (Beck) Dockter. He moved with his family to Velva on April 2, 1929 after his mother's death at a young age. He and his sisters and brothers continued living in Velva, where Alfred and his sister Frieda raised their siblings.

Alfred joined the Civilian Conservation Corps July 21, 1934 and completed his duty March 31, 1935 at the Jay Cooke State Park #2 at Thompson, MN.

Alfred married Florence Duhamel on January 13, 1940 at Glendive, MT. Following their marriage they made their home in Velva. Alfred entered the United States Army on January 18, 1944 and served his country during World War II. He served with the Combat Engineers Battalion Co. B 1276 through the Battle of the Bulge in Germany and was honorably discharged from the military service from Fort Myers, Virginia on October 13, 1945.

Following his discharge he returned to Velva and worked for the Truax-Traer Coal Company, Verendrye Electric and later on the Garrison Dam, but also worked other numerous jobs throughout the years. Alfred did carpentry work for most of his life. He and his family moved to Granville on August 5, 1958. Florence died January 17, 1977.

In 1979 Alfred met his new companion and life-long friend, Darlene Swallers. In the following years they took many travels together for family reunions and visiting with friends and relatives. They enjoyed short or long drives just to see the scenery.

Alfred was a member of the Granville American Legion Post# 155 and the Granville Senior Citizens. To his friends and co-workers he was better known as "Doc", and to his family he was known as "Gramps" or Grandpa.

Survivors: Daughters, Mary Jane (Neil) Fimreite, Norwich, Susan Kent, Commerce City, CO, Sherry (Bernard) Edwardson, Granville; sons, James (Lani) Dockter, Fort Lupton, CO, Darrel "Dick" (Sharon) Dockter, Granville, William "Bill" (Shelli) Dockter, Foxholm, and Dale "Poncho" Dockter, Granville; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; five sisters and two brothers; Companion and life-long friend, Darlene Swallers, Granville and her children, Harvey Swallers and Barb (Mylon) Racine, all of Minot, Duane (Maretta) Swallers of Williston, Rodney (Debbie) Swallers, Granville, Doug Swallers and Rick (Lori) Swallers, all of Medicine Lake, MT, Faye Ann (Duane) Olson, of Granville, and Bonnie (Larry) Lueck of Hettinger; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins survive.

Alfred was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Florence; infant son, Dennis; infant grandson, John and son-in-law, James A. Kent.

Funeral: Thursday, May 18, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, Granville, ND.

Visitation: Wednesday (today) from noon to 7:00 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Burial: Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at the Sawyer Cemetery, Sawyer, ND.
