Margaret Sheila Dixon 1909 - 2004 Margaret Sheila Dixon, 95, 425 N. Broadway, Apt #10, Minot, died Sunday in a Minot hospital, with family by her side. Margaret was born April 14, 1909, in Proctor, MN, the daughter of Michael and Mary Dixon. She was reared and educated in the area, graduating from Stanbrook Hall in Duluth, MN, in 1928. She furthered her education, graduating from the College of St. Scholastica, in Duluth with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in English in 1932. She then taught in high schools in Minnesota and Wisconsin. She furthered her education by achieving a Master of Arts Degree in English literature from the University of Colorado in Boulder in 1951. In 1952, Margaret began teaching composition and English literature at Minot State University, retiring in 1979. While teaching, she contributed to the Journal of Communications and the Language Arts Journal. She also maintained membership in the International Communications Association, the Conference on College Composition and Communications, the College English Association, and the National and North Dakota Council of Teachers of English. Margaret was a longtime member of the Minot branch of the American Association of University Women, and also was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. In November of 1997 Margaret was presented with the Minot State University Distinguished Lifetime Educator Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to Minot State University during employment and after retirement. In October of 1999, she was the recipient of the Minot State University Golden Award, again in recognition of her distinguished service. Throughout Margaret's life her generosity and love of others was exemplified as a contributing founder of the Helen Hoar Memorial French Scholarship as well as a generous supporter of the Benedictine Society within the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN. Margaret was also very supportive of many civic and community organizations, including the Humane Society, the Dakota Boys Ranch, the Disabled American Veterans and the Association of Asthma for Children. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Michael, her sister and brother-in-law, Elinor and Dennis Johnson, nephews, Dennis and Michael, and dear friend, Helen Hoar. She is survived by a niece, Heather (Tim) Wigchers, Superior, WI; nephew, Kim Johnson, Duluth; and longtime friends, Sisters Delores and Lucille Heidt of Minot and Richardton, along with a number of other longtime friends. Margaret always will be remembered for her keen intelligence, her quick wit, her love of learning and her compassion for others.
