Lillie J. DeVore 1902- 2006 Lillie was born September 23, 1902 in Sisseton, South Dakota, the daughter of James C. and Anna Marie "Mary" (Raaum) Hillestad. At a young age she moved with her family to North Dakota, in the Ambrose and Fortuna areas. She attended country school in Divide County and later she moved with her parents to a farm eight miles north of Donnybrook, ND. While living in the Donnybrook area she met her future husband, Orville G. DeVore. They were married on June 20, 1923 in Minot, ND. The first year of their marriage they lived with Lillie's parents and then purchased a farm between Donnybrook and Tolley where they lived until 1934. They moved their family to Washington State for two years to find work during the "Dirty Thirties." They returned to North Dakota and eventually moved into Kenmare. While in Kenmare Lillie helped her mother, at her mother's restaurant, the City Café. She later worked at the Kenmare Baptist Home from the time it opened until she retired 25 years later. Orville died on September 30, 1963. In 1997 Lillie entered the Kenmare Baptist Home and later the Kenmare Community Hospital where she lived until her death. Lillie was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church, Kenmare and active in the church circle. She was a long-time member of the churches quilting club, where she enjoyed cutting blocks to keep the other ladies busy making quilts. Lillie was a great seamstress and spent many hours at her sewing machine to keep her five daughters in clothes. Survivors: Daughters, Rene Melland, Kenmare, Jean Kron, Albuquerque, NM, Donna (Harry) Schiefer, LaQuinta, CA and Lila (James) Pierce, Santa Fe, NM; eight grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; brother, James (Sylvia) Hillestad, Kenmare; numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Lillie was preceded in death by her husband, Orville; daughter, Pearl Sarthory; her parents; brother, Clarence Hillestad and two brothers in infancy; sisters, Nellie Dunham and Pearl Nelson. Funeral: Wednesday, July 5, 2006 at 2:00 p.m., at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Kenmare. Visitation: Wednesday one hour prior to the service in the church. Burial: Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Lakeview Cemetery, Kenmare, ND. Officiant: Rev.
