Fred Dettling 1931 - 2005 Fred Dettling, 74, Velva, died Wednesday, June 8, 2005, at the Souris Valley Care Center, Velva. Fred was born March 12, 1931, in Harvey, ND, to Fred and Marie (Dolan) Dettling. He was raised and attended school in the Velva area. After high school he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served in the Korean War. After four years in the military he was honorably discharged and returned to North Dakota. He was employed at Northern States Power Company in Minot, until his retirement. Fred was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva, the Elks Lodge, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Velva Jaycees, the Knights of Columbus and the Strawberry Lake Association where he held many offices. He loved Strawberry Lake, where he spent the summer months. Fred also enjoyed playing cards, shooting pool, darts and bowling and was active in many of those leagues. He once bowled a perfect game. Fred was also a member of the Velva Golfing Association. Survivors: Sister, Rosemarie (Dale) Harder, Dallas, TX; niece, Michelle (Dennis) D'Andrea; nephew, Mark (Shannon) Harder; aunt, Catherine Kupser and uncle, Mike Burckhard; numerous cousins also survive. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Marie Dettling; stepmother, Regina Burckhard Dettling. Funeral: Tuesday, June 14, 2005, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva, ND. Visitation and vigil prayer service: Monday, June 13, 2005 from noon until 7 p.m. with a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
