Donald Albert Darling 1932 - 2007 Don was born February 29, 1932 at Rolette, ND, the son of James and Mable (Peterson) Darling. He grew up and attended school in Rolette graduating in 1950. He continued his education and graduated from Jamestown College in 1954. He was stationed in the U.S. Army in the Tokyo, Japan area, before becoming a Band Director and Business teacher in Rolette High School in 1956. He was united in marriage to Patricia Tyson on January 4, 1957 at Bottineau, ND, In 1963, he became Poppler Music's School Representative in Grand Forks, ND. From 1969-2001, Don was the Band Instrument Manager and School Representative for Northwest Music in Minot. Don was a 42-year member of the North Dakota State Legion Band, a 38 year member of the Devils Lake, Grand Forks, and Minot Elks Bands. For 18 years, Don was the International Music Camp Representative for the ND American Legion and was an Honorary Life Member of Phi Mu Alpha, MSU, Minot, ND. In 2002 he was awarded ND National Bandmasters Association Distinguished Service Award. Surviving family includes his wife of 50 years, Patricia, Minot; three sons, Gregory (Connie), Fergus Falls, MN, James, Minot, ND and Matthew (Amy Tupper), Minneapolis, MN; two daughters, Kathryn (Mark) Lillemon, Littleton, CO, Natalie (Jerry) Ulberg, Minot, ND; grandchildren Katie Darling, Grand Forks, ND, Robert Darling, Fergus Falls, MN, Brendon Darling, New City, NY, Catherine Darling, New City, NY, Geoffrey Lillemon, Boston, MA, Jennifer Lillemon, Seguin, TX, Jamie Knutson, Minneapolis, MN, Brad Ulberg, Minot, Kelcie Knutson, Minot, ND, Brother-in-Law Jim Tyson, Rhame, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Caroline Darling. A memorial service will take place at the ND Veterans Cemetery in Mandan, ND at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 5th 2007.
