Orvald M. Dahl 1913 - 2006


Orvald M. Dahl, 92, Kenmare, formerly of Columbus, died Wednesday, October 18, 2006 in the Kenmare Community Hospital.

Orvald M. Dahl was born on November 1, 1913 to Mads and Elizabeth (Wick) Dahl at Columbus, ND. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Orvald attended school in Columbus, graduating from High School in 1933. On March 29, 1941 he was inducted into the United States Army where he served in New Guinea, Hawaii and the Phillipines until his honorable discharge on September 26, 1945.

He returned to Columbus where he continued to farm and work for the Truax Traer Coal Mine. After his retirement from Truax Traer, he continued to farm and also drove school bus for the Columbus School District.

Orvald and Edna Lindberg Rude were married on November 2, 1963. Orvald was a wonderful step-father to Dennis (Jean) Rude and Janette (Butch) Peterson and a super Grandpa, Great Grandpa and Great-Great Grandpa. They enjoyed all activities in which their grandchildren participated; traveling to California; dancing and playing pinochle and bingo.

Orvald was a great woodworker. His salvaging of maple flooring from the Columbus School resulted in his making over 600 letter openers which former students from all over the United States now have. His kids, grandkids and great-grandkids have shelves, magazine racks, tables, cradles, planters, desk sets, picture frames, clocks and more to decorate their homes.

On Memorial Day 2006, Orvald was honored with a certificate of being a continuous 60 year member of the American Legion Post #0183 in Columbus. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Columbus, the United Mine Workers of America and Loyal Order of the Moose #1209 in Crosby.

Survivors: Wife, Edna, Kenmare; stepdaughter, Janette (Butch) Peterson, Bowbells; stepson, Dennis (Jean) Rude, Garden Grove, CA; six grandchildren, Janell (Jerome) Hoheisel, John Peterson, Diana (Wayne) Jacobson, Shelley (Craig) Ellsworth, Bridget (Craig) LaTourette; 12 great-grandchildren, Jerel (Melissa Hoheisel, Justin Hoheisel, Jyl Richter, Amy (Eric) Anderson, Eric Jacobson, Joy Jacobson, Tyler and Tucker Ellsworth, Dallas Draviczki, Cade LaTourette; nine great-great-grandchildren, Alexandra and Madison, Richter, Kaley Kostelnik and Hunter Hoheisel; one stepgrandson, Craig (Shirley) Dahl; step great-grandsons, Cragar and Brett Dahl; step great-great grandchildren, Andre, Julian, Saylor, Blythe and Jayden Dahl, and Sheldon Frueh; sister-in-law, Dagny Ferm, Minot; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Orvald was preceded in death by his parents, Mads and Elizabeth Dahl, sister, Clara Dahl; granddaughter, Lisa Peterson; step grandsons, Patrick Dahl, Michael Dahl and Todd Dahl.

Funeral: Monday, October 23, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Columbus.

Visitation: Monday one hour prior to the service in the church.

Burial: Grand View Cemetery, Columbus, ND.
