Virginia Coughlin 1916 - 2008

Virginia Coughlin, 92, Bismarck, formerly of Minot, died Monday, January 12, 2009 in a Bismarck Medical Center.

Virginia was born on September 21, 1916, in Conception Junction, Missouri, the daughter of Ahi and Elizabeth (Simonieg) Hyde. She moved near Lansford, ND when she was six years old, and went to school for eight grades in a country school there. Virginia graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Fargo in 1933, then earned her teaching certificate from Minot State Teacher's College, now Minot State University.

Virginia taught students in Tatman Township and Velva Public Schools. Virginia then went back to Minot State University earning a degree in English and commerce. After she obtained her degree, she taught business at Miss French's Business College in Minot.

On August 5, 1942, she married John D. "Jack" Coughlin in Corpus Christi Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

In 1944, Jack and Virginia moved to Scobey, MT, and managed the Service and Bulk Oil Station owned by Westland Oil. They later moved to Minot where Jack took over as president of Westland Oil Company. Jack died in 1973 and Virginia continued to live in Minot until moving to Bismarck several years ago.

Virginia was an involved member of the community, at one time serving as the state president of the North Dakota Republican Women and on the Board of the National Federation of Republican Women. Virginia loved being a stay-at- home mother to her three children, Mary, Jean and John. She was active in church activities, Our Lady of Grace in Minot and Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Bismarck, the school PTO and the Minot Art Club. Virginia toured Europe several times, visited Japan and Southeast Asia, took a cruise of the North Sea, and had adventures in Mexico and Central America.

Virginia loved to be in an academic environment and was dedicated to the educational advancement of others. She was a past member of the Minot Ryan School Board and the Boards of Regents of Minot State University and The University of Mary.

Those Who Shared In Her Life: son, John (Leslie) Coughlin, Minot; daughters, Mary (Ken) Schuman, St. Louis, MO and Jean (Merv) Anderson, Bismarck, ND; six grandchildren, Brian, Stephen and Kevin (Rita) Schuman, Michael (Rachelle) Anderson, Elizabeth (Steve) Wangler and Hope Finley; five great-grandchildren, Dylan, McKenzie and Kaycee Anderson, Conner and Kaedyn Wangler; sisters, Helen Myler, Atlanta, GA, Betty Ann (Bill) Boughten, Seattle, WA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, John (Jack) Coughlin and great-granddaughter, Briana Wangler.

Vigil Prayer Service: Thursday, January 15, 2009, at 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Mass of Christian Burial: Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot, ND on Friday, January 16, 2009 at 10:30 a.m.

Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND

Visitation: Thursday, January 15, 2009, from noon until 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND

Memorials are preferred to the Minot Catholic Schools Coughlin Scholarship, University of Mary, Coughlin Scholarship, or Minot State University Foundation.
