Merlin "Mert" Coughlin 1928- 2008

Merlin "Mert" W. Coughlin, 79, Kenmare, ND, died Saturday, January 19, 2008, in a Kenmare hospital.

Mert was born on December 16, 1928, in Columbus, ND, the son of Bert and Dora (Finzel) Coughlin. He graduated from Kenmare High School in 1948 and later attended Minot State Teachers College. Mert worked the soda fountain at Schaffer's Drug Store in Kenmare while in High School. Mert married Janet Grenvik on November 18, 1949, in Kenmare. The couple had five children, Mark, Kevin, Michael, Curtis and Connie. Mert worked as a bookkeeper at Sand Motor Company and later at the Kenmare State Bank for 35 years working his way up to Vice President and retiring in 1991. Mert's beloved wife Janet died on June 27, 1997.

Mert was a charter member of Faith Baptist Church in Kenmare where he served as the Missions Treasurer, Deacon, choir director and sang with the Good News Quartet. He was an active member of the Kenmare Lions Club, and served as a Kenmare City Alderman and on the boards of the Kenmare Hospital and Clinic.

Those Who Shared In His Life: Sons, Mark (Vicki) Coughlin, Hugo, MN, Kevin (Carol) Coughlin, Lincoln, NE, Michael (Julia) Coughlin, Garnavillo, IA and Curtis (Tammy) Coughlin, Omaha, NE; daughter, Connie (Butch) Norrie, Kenmare; 16 grandchildren, Heather, Ashlee, Brian (Kylie), Brad (Sarah), Jenna, Josh (Ann), Christianna (Justin), Charitina, Jason, Cherisha, Jesse, Ryan, Brendan, Brock (Shauna), Brekka, and Brea; three great-grandkids, Meghan, Connor and Chase; sister, Delphine Brant, Littleton, CO; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mert was preceded in death by his wife, Janet, his parents, brothers, Marvin, Raymond "Corky" and Howard Coughlin and sisters, Evie Palmer, Ruth Morrow, Delores McConnell and Nancy Gjevre.

Funeral Service: Thursday, January 24, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Faith Baptist Church, Kenmare.

Visitation: Wednesday, January 23, 2008, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Kenmare

Burial: Lakeview Cemetery, Kenmare.
