Evan Cole 1919 - 2006

Evan Cole, 87, 406 31st Ave. SE, Minot, died Thursday, November 30, 2006, in a Minot nursing home.

Evan Reno Cole was born on June 22, 1919, the son of Harlie and Sophia (Walz) Cole at Balfour, ND. He was reared and educated in Balfour and on August 1, 1942, entered the United States Army serving during World War II. During his service, Evan enjoyed playing clarinet in the Post Band. He was honorably discharged on October 21, 1945. After his discharge, he returned moved to Minot where he formed a dance band, Evan Cole and the Aristocats which played in Minot and for dances in different towns after the war.

Evan married Marlyn Ruth Hauge in Velva on April 14, 1946. He worked at Northwest Piano, for several construction companies, and for Ira Rush and Associates constructing the first Minot Air Force Base housing. Evan went to work for Civil Service in 1963 and retired in December of 1984 as a civil engineer. Evan still had the dance band and they played at the Elks, Eagles and American Legion Clubs in Minot and other clubs in the area.

Evan and Maryln enjoyed their lake cabin at Strawberry Lake for over 30 years where the kids and grandchildren had many happy times. He served as past president and on the Board of Directors for the lake when they paved the road and the Mud Cat they had at the lake. He also assisted in getting a fire hall built at the lake so a fire truck could be there during the summer.

He enjoyed woodworking making vases, bowls, candlesticks, and various objects for the yard. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Minot, held a lifetime membership in the Minot Musicians Association, was a charter member of the Eagles Aerie (where he was a member for 65 years) and was a 62 year member of the American Legion.

Survivors: wife, Marlyn, son, Roger Cole and his wife Lisa, daughters, Margo Bolen-Slorby and her husband Tom Slorby, Nancy Swartz and her companion Ken Mattson, all of Minot; grandchildren, Clarence (Debbie) Lundeen, Jeffrey (Brooke) Swartz, Jeremy (Glenda) Swartz, Christopher Bolen, Ginger Bolen, Derek Cole and Joshua Cole; great-grandchildren, Lacey Bolen, Payton, Brody and Macey Swartz, Chezney Swartz, Brock, Blake, Beau Dakota and Baylee Lundeen; sisters-in-law, Betty Jean Beck, Peggy Phillips and Sherry (John) Gaumer all of Spokane, WA; special cousins, Muryl (Chris) Cole of Scottsdale, AZ. Along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Lorraine (Evan) Martwick, infant grandson, Michael J. Bolen, and son-in-law, Allen Swartz.

Memorial Service: Monday, December 4, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Minot

Friends may sign a register book on Sunday, December 3, 2006, from Noon until 5 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
