Dale E. Cockrell 1921 - 2007

Dale E. Cockrell, 86, Minot, died Friday, June 29, 2007 in her home, cradled in the arms of her loving children. Her death was the result of as a result of head injuries she suffered in a fall on August 1, 2005.

Dale Norland was born January 20, 1921, on her family farm near Underwood, ND, the daughter of Mike and Anna Norland. She was raised near Underwood and graduated from Underwood High School in 1938. She then moved to Seattle, WA for two years. She returned to North Dakota and completed business courses in Fargo. She then moved to Minot and became City Sales Girl for Gaffaney's Stationery and Gift Store.

On December 7, 1940, Dale married Dr. Thomas W. Cockrell in Minot's First Lutheran Church. They resided in Minot and in 1957; Dale began her 29 year career with the Ward County Chapter of the American Red Cross. In 1963 Dale and Tom divorced and she continued full time employment at the Red Cross, becoming Chapter Manager in 1971. She remained Chapter manager until her retirement in 1986. One of her greatest satisfactions during her Red Cross years was increasing the number of the active Red Cross volunteers from fewer than 20 in 1957 to over 900 active volunteers in 1986. Dale was recognized for her superior fund-raising abilities, during and after her Red Cross retirement, when she also raised funds for the 1991 purchase of the new Red Cross building. Symbolic of her commitment to the Red Cross and the Minot area community. Dale set as a personal goal of raising $3000, prior to her retirement. She used this money to purchase a complete computer system which she donated to the Ward County Chapter of the American Red Cross as a gift upon her retirement in 1986.

From 1983 through 1987, Dale cared for her former mother-in-law, Mattie Cockrell, in her home until Mattie's death at the age of 102.

Dale was active in many civic affairs; she was a 50 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, serving as Chair of the Girl's State program for nine years. She was a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church for many years, serving on numerous boards, committees and also as an Elder. She was a lifetime member of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Schuman Music club, for which she annually sold community concert tickets. She was a longtime member and former president of Quota Club International. Dale was a founding and charter member of the Minot Icelandic Heritage Society, serving in various capacities, including, president for several terms. She was also an active member of the Scandinavian Heritage Association and a longtime member of the Minot Chamber of Commerce.

Dale served as Chair of Republican District 40-50 and guided the District through reorganization to Republican District 40. She was also a member of Republican Women.

Dale lived at the Marian Heights Condominium Park since 1980 and frequently served on the Board of Management, including terms as president,

Surviving family includes: Daughter: Nordell Cockrell, Minot, ND; son David (Miriam) Cockrell, Fort Worth, TX: four grandchildren; sister-in-law, Gladys Norland, Bismarck, ND; sister, Rose Taschner, Tacoma, WA, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Dale was especially close to her nephews Robert (Cynthia) Norland, Bismarck, ND and Jim (Dorothy) Anderson, Edmonds, WA.;

Dale was preceded in death by her parents Mike and Anna Norland: brothers Joe and John Norland and sisters Bertha Liliequist, Christine Anderson and Margaret Vandament; three brothers and sisters.

Visitation: Wednesday, July 4, 2007 from noon until 7 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, and Thursday, July 5, 2007, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 10-17th Ave SW, Minot.

Funeral Service: Thursday, July 5, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Minot

Burial: A private family burial will take place at a later time.
