Maureen Christensen, 72, Kenmare, died Saturday, August 18, 2007 in her home.

Maureen Mayfield Miller was born on February 21, 1935 in Devils Lake, ND, the daughter of Arthur E. and Helen (Skyberg) Miller. Following graduation from Langdon High School in 1953, she moved to Great Falls, MT to attend college. While in Great Falls, she worked at the Morrison Animal Clinic because of her love for animals. In Great Falls, she met her future husband, Walter Christensen, who she married in 1957. In 1957, they moved to Kenmare where Walt began farming. In their early years of marriage, Maureen worked for Meyer Broadcasting, as a lab technician at Medical Arts Clinic, and as a substitute teacher for Kenmare High School.

Maureen loved her family wholeheartedly and enjoyed spoiling her four grandchildren. She was an incredible cook and an avid gardener. In recent years, she concentrated on mastering lefse - not stopping until it was perfect. Her raspberry and plum jams were incomparable. Maureen loved planting trees and in 1980 she and Walt received the Soil Conservation Achievement Award for their efforts.

Living on the farm allowed her to fulfill her dream of raising many kinds of animals - cattle, chickens, pheasants, cats, dogs, and the neighbors' orphan sheep. In particular, she loved horses. She traveled the country with her children, Lisa and Lars, showing their Appaloosa horses. In 1986, she was named Horsewoman of the Year for the Red River Valley Horse Breeders Association. After the children were grown, she volunteered to judge many 4-H shows and horse shows in the area.

Maureen was very passionate about education. She was the first woman elected to the Kenmare School Board in 1970 and served for 20 years. In addition, she volunteered for several organizations throughout the years.

Those who shared her life include her husband, Walt, with whom she recently celebrated 50 years of marriage; her children, Lisa (Tom) Feldner, Bismarck and Lars (Emily) Christensen, Kenmare; her grandchildren, Clay and Grant Feldner and Annika and Andrew Christensen; brother, Robert (Carol) Miller, Great Falls, MT and sister, Carol (Neal) Holter, Park Rapids, MN; and numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Maureen was preceded in death by her parents.
