Ralph Carty PhotoRalph R. Carty, 89, Bottineau, formerly of Granville, died Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at St. Andrews Health Center in Bottineau.

Ralph Richard Carty was born to Charles “Dick” and Estella “Stella” (Childs) Carty on November 25, 1921 on the family homestead in Gilmore Township, near Granville, ND.  His first eight years of education were in a country school and in 1939 he graduated from Granville High School.

After his formal education he entered the United States Army in October of 1942.  He was stationed in France, Germany and Vienna Austria as a “Buck Sergeant” before he was honorably discharged in March of 1946.  He returned home to the Carty Ranch near Granville and farmed with his father and mother and proudly raised Registered Herefords.

The Carty’s were also one of the first ranches to raise and sell buffalo meat in North Dakota, and did so for 52 years.  In December of 2006 Ralph moved to Bottineau and lived in the St. Andrews Apartments where he made many dear friends and was loved by all.

Ralph was full blooded Irish and proudly wore all green every St. Patrick’s Day and celebrated with many friends and family over the years.  Ralph was a man who will be truly missed and who left kind memories with whomever he met.

Ralph was a lifetime member of Hope Congregational Church in Granville.  He served on the Gilmore Township Board for 50 years and was a member of the Granville American Legion Post #155 for 60 years.  He was a member of the McHenry County Improvement Association, he served on the Middle Souris Irrigation Board, and was a member of the Buffalo Associations for two years and the Hereford (American) Association for three years and was active in many other organizations throughout his life.

Those who shared in his life, cousins, Tom (Marlene) Oster, Bottineau, ND, and Betty (Joe) Lundberg of AZ.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother and sister, Murray and Doris Carty, who lost their lives in a fire at the Carty Ranch on July 22, 1930.
