Lucy J. Cart, 94, Kenmare, died Sunday, May 20, 2007, in a Kenmare hospital.

Lucy Jeannette Gebhardt was born June 21, 1912, at the homestead claim of her parents, Leonard and Ida (Balfour) Gebhardt, in southwest Pierce County, near Anamoose, ND. She was raised as an only child, helping her father on the farm and attended local country schools.

As a young woman during the Great Depression, she worked for various farm families near Orrin and Balta, ND and, for a period, on a farm near Yakima, Washington. In the spring of 1939, she answered an advertisement for a housekeeper by retired farmer Fred Cart and his son, Walter, at Kenmare, ND.

On December 25, 1939, Lucy was united in marriage to Walter J. Cart at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Kenmare. To this union were born three sons: Fredrick James, Leslie Kenneth and Robert John.

Lucy loved the outdoors and farm life. She produced much of the family's food in her large gardens until late in life. She also loved horses and, during the later 1940's and 1950's, insisted on getting out of the house each July to mow the hay meadows with the horse drawn mower. She did many other farm tasks as well, to the extent that raising three children would permit. She was an avid reader and enjoyed listening to classical music and opera.

When the boys were in high school, she was determined to obtain her high school diploma and did so via correspondence through the NDSU Extension Service Continuing Education Program, with a straight A average, and was always proud of her achievement.

On December 22, 1989, Lucy and Walter celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, concurrent with Walter's 100th birthday. Walter passed away on February 7, 1990.

Lucy lived a long and productive life, full of service and help to neighbors, friends and family. She lived sparsely, a product of an economically poor childhood and of the Depression. She was always kind and pleasant to those around her and she leaves behind many fond memories.

She is survived by sons Jim Cart and wife Il Chu, Kenmare, Ken Cart, Grand Junction, CO, and Robert, Kenmare; five grandchildren Theresa Lynn (Michael) Mahler, Broomfield, CO. Katherine Lee (Mike) Leyba, Colorado Springs, CO; Thomas James Cart, Grand Forks, ND, Edward Walter (Elissa) Cart and Shelley Cart, both of Grand Junction, CO; and four great-grandchildren Stephanie Batts, Erin Mahler, Alexys Cart and Charles Cart.

Lucy was preceded in death by her parents, an older brother who died in infancy and her husband Walter.
