She was raised on the Osteroos homestead north of Makoti, ND, and attended school in the Ryder/Makoti area. She chose to leave school early in order to help her parents with the operation of the family farm and so that her younger brother and sister could finish high school and attend college. Orra was united in marriage to Hjalmer A. Carlson, June 19, 1939, in Makoti, ND. She lived with her parents on the family farm while her husband moved to San Francisco, CA to work in the shipyards during WWII. When Hjalmer returned to North Dakota, they made their home in Minot, where they raised their three children. Together, they established Hjalmer Carlson Sanitation Company, where she was active as the bookkeeper for several years. She also sold Avon for a number of years and was a caregiver to her parents. Hjalmer passed away February 15, 1993. She continued to reside in Minot since her husband's death and in August of 2006, she moved into Trinity Homes in Minot. Her brother, Odd, was a constant visitor at the nursing home and had spent countless hours by her side these past two years. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church along with the women's circle and ladies aid group. She also was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary and served as a Girl Scout Leader. She enjoyed bowling and gardening, especially her flowers. She was an excellent seamstress, and enjoyed cross-stitching and she was known for her embroidered dish towels.
