John Cameron 1947- 2005
John William Cameron, 57, 208 Elmer Ave, Deering, died Friday,
May 20, 2005, at his residence.
John was born August 7, 1947, in Glenridge, NJ, the son of John
and Eleanor (Ingold) Cameron. He was raised and educated in East
Orange, NJ, and graduated from Clifford Scott High School in
1966. During his growing years, he helped his father with his
business of racing horses and traveled "the circuit".
He enlisted in the U.S. Army on September 7, 1966 and received
a medical discharge in May 1978. During his military service
he served in Germany and served a tour in Vietnam and was stationed
at several US Army Posts throughout the United States. He received
the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with
4 Bronze Service Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device,
Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Purple Heart, Soldier's
Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal with 3d Award. After his discharge
he worked for a time at Record Ambulance in East Orange, NJ.
John married LaVonne Nadine Hansen on February 14, 1969, in New
Egypt, NJ. He worked for Legal Assistance of North Dakota helping
lower income people with their legal issues. He also worked for
O'DAY Equipment as a pipefitter. In 1983, John and LaVonne moved
to Deering, ND. John returned to college and received a Bachelor
of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Minot State University
in 1986. He accepted a position at the Commissary located on
the Minot Air Force Base working there from 1991 to 1999. In
1999, John became a Deputy for the McHenry County Sheriff's office
graduating from the North Dakota Police Academy and was a Sergeant
at the time of his death.
John was active in the community and could always be counted
on to lend a helping hand. He loved hunting, fishing, camping,
and spending time with family. He spent time at Lake Sakakawea
and Mouse River Park.
John was a member of Deering Lutheran Church, Mason's Guild of
Granville, North Dakota Peace Gardens Peace Officers Association,
North Dakota Sheriff and Deputies Association, and the Deering
Fire Department. He was a founding member of Vietnam Vets Chapter
at Minot State University.
John is survived by his wife, LaVonne Cameron, Deering;
son, Todd Richard Cameron, Deering; daughter, Brandie (Myron,
Jr.) Mogard, Deering; grandchildren, Taylor, Cale and April Mogard;
brother, Richard (Carol) Herbst, LeCanto, FL; step brothers,
Manuel (Kelly) Lavin, Kunkletown, PA; Tony Lavin, Parsippany,
NJ; step sisters, Annie Lavin, Clearwater, FL and Arlene (Martin)
Bruce, Hackettstown, NJ. Aunt Mabel Farrant and many nieces and
nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents;
stepfather, Manuel Lavin; brother, Thomas Herbst; and father-in-law,
Oliver "Todd" Hansen.
Funeral: Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at 11:00 at Bethany Lutheran
Church, Minot.
Visitation: Monday, May 23, 2005 from 1:00 until 7:00
pm at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home.
Prayer Service: Monday at 7:00 pm at the funeral home.
Burial: 2:00 p.m at the Deering Lutheran Cemetery.
