Norma C. Byrd 1928 - 2010

Norma C. Byrd olderNorma C. Byrd, 82, Minot, died Saturday, December 4, 2010 in a Minot hospital.

Norma C. DeMers was born March 4, 1928 on the family farm, near Bachelor, ND to Frank and Minnie (Aasletten) DeMers.  She attended country school in that area and later graduated from the Notre Dame Academy in Willow City, ND.  Norma then attended Minot State Teacher’s College, where she earned her Standard Teaching Certificate.

She taught third grade at St. John, ND, for several years.  On September 2, 1950, Norma married Duane Vlasin.  He passed away in 1954.

On April 14, 1959 she married Donald Byrd at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Minot.  They made their home in Surrey, Minot, Williston and back to Minot in 1989, where they since have lived. 

Norma had been legally blind for many years, but didn’t let that get her down.  She was an amazing lady with a lively spirit, who enjoyed watching all sports, and knew all the players on each team.  She loved to play bingo at least once a week, and truly enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Norma was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church, Minot.  She was a member of the ChristianNorma C. Byrd Newer Photo Women and the Association for the Blind.

Those who shared in her life, husband, Donald, Minot; children, Dee Sexton, St. Augustine, FL, Donna (Tom) Anderson, St. James, MN, David Byrd, Garrison, ND and Dixie Callehan, West Fargo, ND; two grandchildren, Caleb and Nick Anderson; brothers and sisters, Frances Neal, Pocotello, ID, AJ “Spud” (Pat) DeMers, St. John, ND, Marie Gooch and Loretta Weber, both of Minot, and Robert (Yvonne) DeMers, St. John; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Norma was preceded in death by her first husband, Duane, and her parents.

Funeral:  Friday, December 10, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Leo’s Catholic Church, Minot.

Visitation and vigil prayer service:  Thursday, December 9, 2010 (today) from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with the vigil prayer service at 7:00 p.m., all at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND.

Burial:  Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND.
