She was raised on the family farm and graduated from Kenmare High School in 1948. Carol went on to attend Dana College in Blair, Nebraska, where she graduated in 1952, earning a teaching degree. She returned to Kenmare and helped at the family grocery store. Carol met her true love, Dale Byrd, and they were married on November 26, 1954 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Kenmare.
